5spd oil leak ?

Installed a rebuilt 5spd about 3-4 months ago. No leaks till now. Oil seems to be leaking from the bell housing. Any ideas? Pete

Rear main seal.
I am doing my trans/clutch and I just finished putting in a new rear main seal.
Cheap money when the trans is already down. $50 at cummins.

Can the tranny leak from there? It looks lighter than engine oil. It could be the rear seal though. It isn't much though. Pete

Pete, it could leak from the input shaft seal on the trans, I had alittle oil on the underside of the engine, and it was the same color as the bellhousing so I knew it's the rear main seal.

Mine has alittle leak from the tranny to transfercase connection, and I don't know how u can fix that because theres no seal there.....

Tranny to Transfer Case Seal/Gasket

Box5,
I believe that the transmission will have a retainer seal out the back and the transfer case will have a retainer seal out the front where the 2 mate. Some vehicle applications will have a gasket between the two housings but not to seal in oil.

Having said that I also do have a small 4dr 4wd car where the transmission and the transfer case are bolted and sealed together as they use the same oil and there is only one drain and fill plug for both.

ur's could be leaking from that retainer with the 4 bolts Pete.

The manual didn't mention any kind of seal where the trans and t-case meet, I thought it was gonna leak because u can see that theres nothing between that and the trans oil, so it would just rush back there and leak, the dealer didn't have a part number for it, so I just think it creates it's own seal I guess.

Ok. It isn't much and just started. I'll just keep an eye on the fluid level.
Box5, how do you like the 5spd? Pete

do u have a part number ^? Because the manual didn't say anything about a seal there, and I couldn't find any info on one.

Pete, I really like it, i'm finally pretty comfortable with the shift points of it and it's getting more fun to drive each time.

Mine has leaked since I got the 5 speed installed. it is leaking $$$$ from the front bearing retainer. I think the level of the oil has something to do with it as my leak has slowed down. it is probably low but I'm not climbing under that truck right now. I should have sealed it before I installed the trans!!!

No problems but when I hammer the throttle (still no rocket ship!) the tranny sounds real loud. no it's not engine noise. It only comes when the tranny is under strain. probably just old age

looking for rebuild guy now, manual or auto doesnt matter just getting

If you change your rear main seal, you will be surprised at the size of it. Make sure you have some heavy duty seal pullers handy.
I used a screw at 3 and 9 and a slide hammer with a vise grip set-up.
The seal is about 5" round.
