50 mpg ?????

anyone know anything about Mr garmans 1500 with a 700hp 5.9 in diesel power claiming 50 mpg????. sounds like big time bs to me. theres guys that have 3.9s in 1500s and it still sounds like 30mpg is tough! it said he had big gears in it but still. If its another story where its running on dual fuels they need to start correcting the mpg figures to include consumption of the other fuel.

I don't think its too far stretched. Traveling at 50mph and probably 1100 rpms I could see it plausable.

I was able to get almost 25mpg hand calculated traveling 55mph at 1400rpms. Some gearing change & more low end torque, and it could be there.

I don't believe that crap for a second, unless it's in a vehicle that only weighs like 2000lbs and he never goes above 45mph. It takes X amount of horsepower to make a vehicle go Y miles per hour, which requires Z amount of fuel and there is nothing you can do to change that. I don't buy it, period.

Uh hmmm... Jetta weighs about 3200... 50MPG no problem

Right, but can you put a cummins in a Jetta? Don't think so. And if you did, it would sure weigh more than 3200lbs.

I would think the aerodynamics would be the biggest roadblock from getting anything over 30 in a fullsize pickup, no matter how efficient make the power to the wheels.

The truck does run 50mpg. It is a custom build 12v placed into a 1500 SRT10 body. The truck is tuned perfectly and geared beautifully. Jeff is known to give up the keys to the the truck for anyone who leaves their truck with him for work. Personally I know a few people who have driven it and it is down right scary.

So the real question is, why hasnt dodge put a diesel in the 1500's if they can get 50 mpgs?

I would really like to see what he has done to do that. I think there would have to be some serious wind cheating aerodynamic mods. Is that 50 mpg for diesel or are there other fuels being burnt as well? Some guys claim huge diesel mpg, but in fact are burning propane, used motor oil, veggie or some other fuel and they don't count that fuel and diesel being burnt.

I guess I'm doubting the 700 hp AND 50 mpg. One or the other, but not both. I would sure liked to be proved wrong and I would be the first to admit it.

i've got the magazine right here. it says that jeff had two tests where he was able to acheive 55 mpg on the highway from his shop to Macon, Georgia and back to his shop. the trick is to be very light on the throttle, and to keep boost below 3 pounds or so, even though it can make 80 psi. The twin chargers kept EGT's below 600 fahrenheit, and 3.21 gears kept the engine poking along at about 1300 rpm at 60 mph.

thats pretty much word for word out of the June 2009 issue of Diesel Power.
