My Uncle's 2000 shifts a lot nicer than my 95, so how can I make mine shift the same?

I assume that I need to find a top cover, and shifter. Will the shift forks come on the cover?

Please excuse my ignorance, as I don't know a lot about transmissions, other than mine shifts like an old John Deere tractor---Basically move the lever till you find it.

Also, does anyone have, or know where I can find a breakdown of this tranny, and also of the NV-4500 in the GM trucks, as we have one of them that needs "help.
