5" exhaust and cat questions

I have been wanting to go to a 5" exhaust for a while now, mostly just for the sound. I really didnt like the sound of the exhaust when the truck was stock so I went just with the muffler delete. I dont mind how the truck sounds with the muffler delete, I would just like it to sound deeper and quieter. I dont know if that combination is possible though.

I was thinking about running a 5" exhaust with a muffler and leaving the stock cat in place. Anybody ever done this? With the increasing emphasis on emissions it seems like in the long run it would be easier to just have the cat under there.

I realize the stock cat is made to fit a 4" exhaust, but I dont think it would be too hard to trim an inch or so off the ends of the cat so you could connect the 5" system to it.

Any thoughts on this? I mostly would like a nice and deep, but soft tone from the exhaust.

Thanks guys,
Alex

Keep the cat in the garage and install if you ever need to do emission testing.

stovetop535 i understad ur thoughts but i agree that u should leave it on the shelf somewhere and get a good 5"system you would be alot happier. The factory cat is quite restrictive on our trucks. I have a 5" silverline in 304ss all the way back with muffler eqquipped and it sounds great. No drone except if you romp on it doing bout 85 or faster, hwy speed sounds good and deep but not to obnoxious. hope this helps jared

I have 5" on mine and love it! no cat just muffler, sounds good when you pass someone or next to bridge walls, the only drone I get is when I'm pulling my goose neck with a load.

As others have said, the stock cat is rumored to be restrictive. You, being in Wyoming, have another option. Magnaflow makes a nice 5" exhaust, and they also have a high-flow diesel catalytic converter. Nice combo, in my opinion.

I wish it was CARB certified, I'd already have one...

Since that mganaflow cat is not carb certified, would it just pass the visual inspection? I heard that was a pretty pricey piece too.

I agree with the smarty comment above, since I purchased mine I am really able to control the smoke especially with the pod. I am not one of those guys that really likes a lot of smoke everywhere.

What probably inspired this post was hearing my friends duramax for the first time. I was 10 feet away form it and hardly new it was running. The thing almost sounded like a jet idilling next to me.

Thanks for the input guys

I just ordered a Magnaflow 5" turbo back. I should have it tomorrow (according to UPS) and plan to have it on by sundown. I plan to take some videos before and after so I will post after the holidays.

I am doing all the work myself to include TIG welding in V-Band flanges into the DP for the the inline PAC Brake that is also being installed. It will probably be the first weekend of January until the brake goes in, but if I have things my way the Magnaflow will be installed before the end of the day tomorrow.

I have a 5" turbo back on my 06. The shop gutted the cat, placed a section of the 5" pipe to the cat and used a plasma to cut the ends off the cat enambling the pipe to run thru the cat then welded the cat in place. There are no sensors to the cat so the only emmision/inspection is a visual. Having done that I noticed no difference in egt temps, still the same. But maybe better in the long run with nothing to get clogged. Sound is good, drone is bad while towing between 2000-2500 rpm. I have heard there are better mufflers to use that help the drone but this is the 2nd aftermarket exhaust and I am tired of spending money!

Can you get some shots through the ends of the muffler so we can see what the inside looks like? I would like to see if the muffler necks down from 5" to
4". I like the pipes on the magnaflow but if the muffler has a 4" core or has louvers I will get a hushpower muffler and use it with the magnaflow pipes.
Thanks.

Here in CA there has to be a CARB certification number on any aftermarket emissions device, be it a header, cat, etc. The Magnaflow cat won't work for us left coasters, but I would think it would be fine for you in your seemingly lax state...

Whatever, I may just order it and play stupid. I'm sick of my droning, vibrating Donaldson exhaust...
