4x4 problems

Hi,

New to the site and to owning a diesel truck. I own a 2003 Dodge 2500 SLT quad cab, 6speed manual. I have been very impressed so far with this truck, especially the power and fuel economy.

I am wondering if someone can tell me why there is loud banging/clunking sound when I put the truck in 4x4 - both 4hi and 4lo. I have taken the front drive shaft off and the banging/clunking sound has gone away. As well, I have tried the 4x4 now with the front drive shaft removed and it goes into both 4 hi and lo without any problems.

I suspect there is a front u-joint issue? I lifted the front end and both front tires seem tight?

Also, not sure if there is a vacuum pump that engages the 4x4 or not in 3rd generation Dodges? If there is, could this be the issue?

Any help would be appreciated...

Thx
GP

First of all WELCOME to DTR!
From your description I would almost think you have a problem in the front gear set.

Probably a good idea to pull the front diff cover and check out the gears.
Does it make the noise only in certain situations like turning, backing up, or all the time?

Rockcrawler304,

It makes the noise while in 4x4 backing up and moving forward. I think it is exaggerated when I turn left.

Check your front U-joints. Mine did the same thing and it was the drivers side U-Joint.
