That is rather odd. If your 98.5 is that same as my 2000, then that is just about the simplest circuit in the whole darn truck. When I was troubleshooting mine a year ago, I popped the wires and boot of the switch on the CAD. I jumpered the two connectors in the boot on the light came on, removed jumper and light went on (obviously with truck turned to run so there was power to the dash). the only other thing in the circuit is the contact switch. The contact switch is easy to remove from the CAD. You MIGHT lose a little oil if you pull the switch. If it were me, I would test the wiring like I mentioned first, then pull the contact switch and test it with a test light or ohm meter.
Hey - I just had a thought that some others can weigh in on - if you connected the vacuum lines to the CAD backwards, would the CAD operate backwards???? Would it lock the CAD when t-case was in 2wd and unlock CAD when t-case was in 4wd????

Sounds like the vacuum lines to the CAD are backwards.

What he said yes, I did that to mine when I replaced all the lines. Just flip the two around.

See, I am not so stoopid after all. As a wise man once told me 'Even a blind squirrel finds a nut know and then'.
