Anyone know what a 48re cooler line flows? Thanks.

I suspect it's really a function of the rpm among other variables. If you look up velocity ratings for line diameters then factor in the restrictions, I suppose it could be all over the place. 2.1 is a good estimate but I'm mostly curious why you want to know.
I would think the pressure averaging 100 psi would flow around 2 gpm on a 3/8" line.

It will depend on the pressure and that will depend on the state the trans is in. Since the return flow doesn't go directly to the pan its really a moot point.

I am thinking about running an inline filter to help keep the ATF clean. I was looking at the FL1A motorcraft oil filter since it has a bypass valve in it but I am unsure about how well it will flow.

Go here http://dieselperformance.com/ and look up their info on the Tranny Oil filter. They actually have the install procedure so you see extactly what's up before you buy.

Not a good idea with a stock transmission, restriction of the lube flow which already less than adequate at times will do nothing but lead to more problems than it solves. At 160 psi it may be adequate if the filter will flow enough but it can and will fall short at 50 psi or less when full flow is needed.

Simply put, if you are getting enough FOD you need to filter there are other problems that need addressed the filter will not cure. A fine enough filter cannot be run on the stock system without an external pump. Much more effective all around to change the fluid frequently.

It amounts to one of those placebo mods that makes one feel good but provides little to no benefit.

I agree with no_6_oh_no. I've never heard of a tranny fail due to dirty fluid, but I've heard of lots that have failed because they overheated. If you want to do something to help your tranny, do something that will enhance cooling.

My transmission is not stock, I have a shift kit and a billet converter. Why do you say the filter will fall short in lower pressure?

I actually have seen a transmission run into issues due to dirty fluid, my father's 4r100. Since my trans we rebuilt I rarely see temps over 150* even in the summer, so cooling is not a huge deal to me right now. Really I just want to get the most out of ATF that I can.

What's you definition of "a fine enough filter?" I've been running a bypass filter off the cooler lines on my 48RE for over a year, no issues.

Except maybe cleaner fluid, if you consider than an issue.

What filter if you don't mind me asking? Any pictures of this set up?

It's presently got a Wix 51069, which is approximately 10 times more efficient than the in-pan stock filter:

But on the next fluid service I'll install a 51641, which is a much larger, 12um nominal-rated filter for even better performance.

There's a restrictor on the filter input, but I forget what size, maybe .035", IIRC.

OBTW, no6ono, no leaks either. Just a preemptive comment, since I know you like to address that angle.
