47re vs. 48re

What are the differences between the 47re and the 48re 4-speed auto transmissions? Reliability, maintenance, ratios....? Thanks...

Someone else can chime in with the specific mechanical differences, but in a nut shell the 48RE can handle more torque. That's why you could never get an H.O. (high output) engine with the 47RE. That said, the later 47REs made in 2003 seem to be holding their own in stock or slightly modified form.

IMHO if you're going to go with heavy mods (>75hp)to a 47RE equipped truck, then transmission upgrades are in order as well. A built 47RE is every bit as strong as a built 48RE.
