4 cyl cummins
I was at a local fuel shop today, fueling up, when a early 80's chevy dooley pulled up on the other side of my pump. It had that unmistakable cummins rattle too it ;D, but there was something different with the exhaust sound. I walked up to the driver and introduced myself, and my affiliation with this fine site. After talking with the owner he showed me a peek under the hood at a 4cyl. (I believe it was inline). It had the same type of valve covers and a nice BHAF. The only thing was the turbo was really small. I didn't get to talk to him much, as there were others waitimg to fuel. But, he did sat that the motor came out of a old Bread delivery van. Best of all, he is interested in our local chapters upcoming dyno meet. I am interested in seeing what it can do.
Does any one know any info on these motors? What kind of turbo would that be? He did say that he pulled the whole unit out and put it strait into the chevy.

It's a Cummins 4BT engine, basically a 5.9 Cummins with 2 cylinders missing. It's a 3.9 liter engine, the highest rating I see in my Cummins manual is 150 HP, but that's probably a marine engine. Bread truck motors were probably in the 100 - 120 HP range - get the CPL and I can tell you more. The turbo would have to be smaller to keep from being laggy, I don't know which one was used.

I've used these engines in log skidders as well, the hp is around 150 or so in these too. Sure was quieter than the 453 Detriot that they replaced. I liked the power of the Detroit better though. Can't help you on the turbo.
I know a guy who put one of them into a 1/2 ton Ford. He said all he had to do was get a little creative with the heat wrench. Sure did make me think my ears had quit working right the first time I heard it.
Ed
