4" or 5" exhaust ????
Well....the stock tail pipe finally fell off the 98 3500 dually today! It was mig welded 2 times and there's nothing left....... I got the "ok" from the bossman to install a new strait pipe system ;D ;D....
Will the 4" with an new downpipe be good enough or will going to the 5" really be worth the money? I just got the rig and plan on doing some bombing, but it's an auto....
I'd appreciate your $.02 and recommendations...

As much as the tranny will hold!!!!!
Plate, timing, maybe injectors, BHAF, gauges.....
I guess I'll go with the 4"......where can I find a good systems for a GOOD PRICE?

I guess you have decide if you want SS or Aluminum....SS will last a fair bit longer but is more expensive.
I hate to recommend Banks - but Ive heard their SS exhaust is pretty good. There are many manufacturers available. Heck, your local muffler shop may make their own system. I would check out Rip Rooks stuff:

High quality and about as cheap as youll find.
Make sure you do something about the air filter.....Id suggest an AFE MegaCannon or Scotty II intake or BHAF.
BTW, you probably wont be able to do a plate and injectors with NO tranny mods....well youll be able to do it - and then youll be walking until u get the tranny done

There is a debate in another forum about this topic - HP and reliability. This is very debatable of course, but these trucks should take somewhere between 375-500 hp without damaging the engine or reducing lifespan. Of course, it depends on how you drive and what you use the truck for.

Another section of this forum or a completely different forum? What is the main weak spot? I'd imagine one of the biggest things would be the head studs or bolts. I'd want at least 375hp if I got one. I'm a little addicted to power but don't rag on stuff, I'm a sunday driver most of the time, but those other times. It probably wouldn't be towing near as much as burning rice.

I love my 4" DPP System, Excellent product, price, easy install and nice price too. Got mine through Rod at Wildcatdiesel, or give Mark a call at DPP. Either one will set you up. 8)

I was over 500 when I changed to 5" exhaust, it did help reduce EGT's and decrease spool up time. You need to be over 500 to use the 5" without hurting your performance. The 375 H.P. is right in the middle of what the 4" is real good for and it is easy to reach and not recuce driveabilty.

I would definatley agree with what everyone else is saying. I had straight 5'" on my truck for a while and then I put a muffler on it. A couple weeks ago there was a topic on here about this same debate. I learned that unless you are over that 500 HP range the 5" pipe will actually hurt you. Last weekend I went back to 4" pipe with a 5" tailpipe section. Truck seems to perform much better now. Good luck

This is the ULTIMATE question!!! Aside from headgaskets, it's been a race to find the limits of the engine. It's so beefy that many hafve TRIPLED the power output and the stock bottom end is holding it just fine, thank you.
The 24 is every bit as strong as the 12V. Although they don't offer the 370hp version of the 24V like they did of the 12V, they didn't make the internals any weaker on the new engine.
