I may not be entirley correct, but I think the 3rd gen axles are wider by a couple inches.

They are also made by AAM, not Dana. I am not sure of the dimensions either.

Talking Aam

Would not get rid of your Dana's! The AAM"s are not to good, twist and bend to easy! Grumpy John 4X4

I dont have a rear end on the truck to begin with...thats the problem. Found a couple low mile 3rd gen ones for cheap. A dually axle for a 2nd gen is $800+ where I can get a 3rd gen srw for $250.

This is an old 69 chevy truck project going on a 2nd gen Dodge frame.

Go with the 3rd gen. If you don't, I'll trade you my 2001 D70 for a 3rd gen AAM. Guys I have talked to that sled pull, and hear about my D70 woes on the sled track told me to get an AAM to put in it.

Does it bolt right in or does the leaf spring perches have to be cut off and rewelded?

Thanks
Tim

You're best bet is to measure the outside to outside width of your stock springs and then ask one of the guys in the 3rd gen forum to take a minute to do the same. Heck, you could probably go down to the local Dodge dealer and measure one up.
