3rd Gear

Hello, I have a 5spd Getrag transmission. I noticed that the 3rd gear is hard to actually get into gear. There is no grinding.. it's almost like I'm pushing and she's rejecting. Few seconds later she accepts it and everything is good to go. It does help if I give it some DIESEL! Is this a longer gear? The reason I ask is because when I let off the clutch pedal it seems to dog the motor.

I'm use to driving syncomesh transmissions so this is a little different for me.

sounds like a synchro problem from what you describe

In my experience with nv 4500s third are always the first syncros to fail, in fact mine needs them as well, not as critical for me considering I only use the clutch to start and stop

Sounds right. You could try and double clutch.

not using the clutch on a nv is a sure way to prematurely wear out the synchros. eaton 10 spds dont have synchros so therefore there is no need to use the clutch

I'm aware the eatons don't have syncros, I've driven log trucks for the last twelve years, if one knows what the are doing and doesn't try to be in a hurry or force things I don't see what harm will come to the syncros, I've driven this one like that for a year now, and the betray in my first gen for five that way with no apparent I'll effects. However if there is something I'm missing, I always welcome the chance to learn something new!

If the synchros are worn already, it won't hurt them anymore. The 5 spd in my dually is like that, its faster for me to float the gears than it is to use the clutch. My G56 doesn't like that as much though, but its lightyears ahead of the NV4500.
