Today i shifted into 3rd gear and got a loud rattling or knocking noise that increased as I accelerate. The truck shifts fine into all other gears but third. I tried it again and as i go to put the truck in 3rd I fill a vibration on the shifter. The truck will move in 3rd but sounds bad. Any ideas what it might be?

mine was doing that and it was in the transfer case. there is a snap ring on the rear output bearing that came off. that let it have too much endplay and would try to engage the syncro hub, which knocked one of the syncro keys off and the hub was not stationary anymore.. better try to track it down before it gets expensive.

bad part is you cannot get to the snapring untill you pull the transfer case.
