I don't think you wasted anything. The 8.5 inches, is it the vertical mounting you are referring too? I suspect it is, cause that is what they wanted when I installed my air bags. Be a little more specific , and gee don't wuss out so fast, there is always a way.

I think that you will find that the axle is narrower. The pickup uses the inside tire at the same location as a single wheel and adds the outer tire outside the pickup body. Shorter is stiffer and handles more weight.

You should be able to return the airbags. Some really do have fitment issues. You may find that Timbren's fit as they replace the bump stop.
