315/75/16 or 285/75/16

Ok. I'm getting tires installed this weekend. I've got a 2" leveling kit. Right now, my 305/70/16's rub on the lower control arm. I've been told that going to a 75 series tire will help this since their not as wide. I'm looking at buying a set of 16x8" rims with either 4 or 4 1/2" backspacing (don't remember). I can get the 285's installed for 476.76. The 315's I can get done for 781.44. I really want the 35's, but if they are going to rub to bad, then I don't want to hassle with them until I get the wheels. But if I go with the 285's, I'll be left kicking myself in the butt for not getting the 35's cause I know as soon as I get the 285's, I'll somehow magically get the money for the wheels and then I'll be left with the 33's for another 35k miles. Decisions, decisions.

I'd go with the 285’s the 315's are to big and will be a pain in the butt. I am talking from personal experience.

I went to 285's from 305's and I don't like them. They look way skinny compared to the 305's. They'd look tiny next to 315's. I will be going back to 305's when I wear these out. Mine only rubbed when the wheel was locked either direction. I didn't think it was too bad. I went with 285's because I got them for super cheap, but IMO, the 305's just look alot better on a big truck like ours. Why aren't you going back with 305's?

if you got rubbing problems now with 305's you'll deff have more rubbing problems with 315's since theyre about 1/2" wider than the 305's ........... wait till you get rims then get the 315's

if you got to stay with your stock rims go 285's or stick with the 305's if they don't rub that bad

They only rub at full lock. I've wanted 35's for a LONG time. I don't want to get the 33's (either 305 or 285) and then get the new rims and be stuck with the 33's, wishin I had gotten the 35's. I wonder if they'll mount a 35 up and let me see what it would look like and where it would rub and stuff. In my dreams maybe.

I really lucked out . I stopped by a tire shop to get my 285's rotated, and a guy driving a Food dually came in to get new tires. He had 315-75's that were still in good shape ( 1/4"-1/2" tread left). We got to talkin about the BFG all terrains he was replacing. I jokingly said they could dispose of them in the bed of my truck, and he did . I just haven't had the time to change them out yet. I figured this was a cheap way to see if they will fit. There is one thing, I am 2wd.

I guarantee those 315s will rub, it just depends on how much work you want to do to make them work. It also depends on how far the new rims stick the tire out, since that will increase the radius of travel the tire has when your turning. I ran 35s on my '96 with a 2" lift and had to modify the back of the front wheel wells. I can't remember the offset I had, but the outside of the tire was even with 2" flares. I do think the look of the 315s is well worth the work and I would definitely do it again.

Also, my local tire shop will mount any tire and wheel combo and throw them on my truck just so I can look at them. They should do this if they want to sell you tires.

I might have them do it. Just got word back from the financial department (aka mom and dad) and they said that if I can bring the guys down $25/tire, I can get the 35's. If not, then I'm stuck with getting the $285's.

Start looking around. I know my brother got some tires from tyresinternational for cheaper then around here. He also got rims though so maybe that was the big difference. Just go down there and talk to the guys, maybe they will come down.

I hope they will. Maybe I'll give them the "I'm a broke college kid and don't have that much money" routine. Or maybe I'll just tell them that I want the 35's, but can't afford them unless they come down a little bit.

what about 295's? I was kinda in your position a few months ago, had 285's and wanted 305's but no any rub.........I like the 295's, a little bit wider than the 285's i had but dont rub like 305's will.

good luck

Well, after looking at the truck today, I'm going with the 315's. The 305's are just to small on there. Especially with the lift. I'll put up with the rub (I've put up with it for the past 50K miles) until I can get some new wheels and then eventually a lift. Thanks for all the advice yall.
