30" Magnaflow quiet enough?

Hello.

First let me say that I don't want a loud exhaust. I don't mind a little more volume when jumping on the throttle, but for the most part, I want it quiet. And I absolutely do not want drone.

My stock exhaust is rattling too much, so I'm getting ready to replace from just ahead of the muffler all the way to the tip. My favorite local exhaust shop (Welding Works in Orange, CA) installs a lot of 30" Magnaflow mufflers on the diesel pickups in the area. Will a 30" Magnaflow be quiet enough? The owner told me he had a guy come in with a '95 CTD, and the person said it was borderline too loud. So, they installed a shorty Magnaflow just ahead of the muffler. It quieted it right down. I'd rather avoid that if I can, as I'm trying to keep the costs down.

I don't know exactly which muffler the shop would be installing, other than the "30 inch" one. The Magnaflow site does not appear to show all of the mufflers they make, so I wasn't able to find it online either.

What experience have you had with the Magnaflow mufflers? Do they blow out and become louder as time goes by? I don't want this, as I use my truck to feed my family, and I can't afford to pull up in front of a job site, or a customer's house with exhaust sounding like my old vehicle's did when I was in high school.

Thanks.

Roy

I have the 4" MagnaFlow system on mine. It has a nice sound and is not loud at all. Nothing like my cousin's stock with a straight pipe. The muffler is a straight through design. BUT, there is a slight drone now at 2000 - 2100 rpm. If you drive slower or faster it is good. This drone on mine is at 100 - 110 km/h. It may be different or not there if a person was just replacing the muffler instead of going to 4 inch pipe.

I've got the 30" MagnaFlow on my '01 with 4" pipe head to tail. Nice sound, not too loud.

When I put it on, I remember reading somewhere to mount the muffler as close to the downpipe as you can get it. It doesn't drone at all for me-and at 2000-2100 RPM's in high gear I'm showing 15-20 PSI boost pushing this tall sail of a truck camper down the road against the wind!

Maybe I should try moving my muffler forward. I think I can change it around with one of the pipes.

I like my Magnaflow system, but now with the twins its almost to quiet. It seems to have lost the lower end tone and replaced it with the high pitch whine of a 747 taking off Thats in the cab anyway, im not to sure about the sound outside.

royta,

Just a suggestion, but by the time you get the muffler welded in add the time and labor from the exhaust shop and the price of the muffler you're going to be near or maybe even more than getting a replacement system. A quality aluminized system with a 30 inch muffler like ours is less than 340.00, there is freight but no sales tax. You still have smaller sized pipes that aren't mandrel bent from the stock system too that is a restriction to flow etc.

Just thought you'd want to consider the other options.

I am aware of the mail order exhaust systems, however, I'm not a fan of non-welded systems. That's just the way I am.

edit - In other words, I don't mind spending the extra little bit to have it assembled by hand. The shop already has the mandrel bent tubes, they just spend the extra little time to make sure everything is the perfect fit, without the chance of metal vibrating against metal because it is only clamped, as opposed to welded.

I have a mbrp 4" Aluminized. I was worried about the noise. I have no interior noise except at 2000 to 2200 in drive. (Only tried it once) I don't know under load in drive. I don't hear a thing in the cab pulling 6000 pounds in Odrive at any speed. It's alot louder on the outside. It's a nice exshuast with onepiece tail pipe and all hangers welded. I got the system for 300 shipped. I'm really happy with it. Had it about three months now. Just need a nice tip now.

The sound at 2000 to 2200 is what worries me. 70 to 75 MPH on an auto with 3.53's is right in that RPM range. I can't think of anything less desireable than a drone at my normal cruising speed.

So, moving the muffler as close to the front is the ticket?

royta, I went thru all that drone stuff, empty and loaded. Moving that muffler to the front as close as possible worked for me on the factory and the 4inch, that muffler Mark is suggesting is a good one for not loosing the packing fast. Also some have had luck with experimenting with some angle iron and moving it around and back and forth until the drone goes away, and also check it when loaded or pulling a load as it will come back when she works hard.
