2WD Wheel Bearing Nut

How do you guys tighten the wheel bearing nut on the front of a 2WD truck? Shop manual says to tighten it up until no more than .001 to .002 thou end play.

So I'm out in Cal. away from my farm and putting some Hawk pads on the front. As long as I've got the calipers off I might as well re-grease the bearings I figure. But I don't have my old Brown & Sharpe dial indicator with me. So tell me what you do. I've done it before with no indicator, but I forget now exactly how I did it.

I tighten them until I feel a drag. I back off just enough
till I don't feel it.

I just snugged them up a little over finger tight.
