View Full Version : 2wd A518 + 4wd 727= 4wd 518? I hope......

Just wondering, hoping actually, is it possible to take a 2wd A518 and use the tailshaft of a 4wd 727 and make a 4wd A518? This is only part I need to make my truck 4X. Or do I just run a divorced transfer case? Any advice?

Won't work, the tail is where the overdrive is housed, completely different from a 727 to an A518. You need to find the tail piece from a 91.5 to 95.
Advice, yup, wait a little bit, you'll find one. I'm trying to get my hands on a 4x4 A518 for a friend, but he needs a 2wd tail housing for a 4BT conversion he has in the works.

See our tranny guy says different. He showed me what the OD consists of, it is a solenoid in the actual trans. Unless he is a BS'er but he gave a new solenoid and screen for an A518 and said to pull the pan off and take the valve body down and you can get right to it. He said that the reason for the OD in these trucks to work when it wants to is because the screen will get gummed up with junk and no allow the fluid pressure to operate the OD. He is getting kind of old but he's always seemed to know his stuff, always built us wicked transmissions. Oh well, maybe I'll just keep looking around, unless anyone else has any info. Thanks man.

He's right on the operation of it. But the overdrive is in the tail section of the transmission, while the front section is similar to the 727, the overdrive is basically a 2 speed add on so to speak, 2 ratios, 1:1 and .69:1.
Where in NE PA do you live? And what trans shop, maybe I've heard of them.

Hey thanks for clearing that up. Maybe if he explained a bit further he would have got to that part. So if I had the tail shaft from a 4X 518, I could do this or do the output shafts differ from each other. Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.
Oh yeah, I'm about half an hour north of the Scranton/Wilkes Barre area.

would this swap work, and just loose the od on the 518

The output shaft is different from a 727 to a 518. The tail housing bolt pattern is completely different also. The 727 tail housing will not bolt to a 518.
The internals are the same between a 518 and 727 inside the main case. The cases are different in the tail housing area.
