Am considering upgrading from OEM 16" wheels with 285s to 20" rims. I still want load range "E" tires tho, but it seems the choices are a bit limited.

I drive mainly on road and tow a little - nothing super heavy. Mostly light bumper pulls and the occasional 25-29' fiver.

I'd also like to see any pics of 2nd gens with 20" wheels. Please include the tire size you are running with the 20s and it's load range if you know it. I prefer to keep a similar diameter to the 285s - only going up an inch or so max. Currently it looks like 305/55/20 in an E rating might be the ticket, but I'm curious what others run.

As far as tread, I'd prefer something with an M+S rating - up to and including a BFG A/T. BFG does make the 305/55 size for like $350 - OUCH! but they don't last long enough to justify that cost IMO.

I was just curious because my current 285's have a 3700 lb per tire rating in load range "E". It seems the lower profile "E" rated tires like a 55-series are in the 3100 lb category or so. This should be fine, but I'm curious about others who have actually ran a setup like this... and I am also paying attention to the load rating of the wheel itself. I don't want a cracked one or worse on the road somewhere. Hence I'm looking for experience.

The stock LT265/75R16-E tires that come on most trucks only hold 3195@80psi. A LT285/75R16-D holds the same weight but at 65psi. Some 10ply tires in the 285s will hold more weight with the stiffer 3ply sidewalls. The Toyo ATs are great tires and the LT305/55R20-E will hold 3195, the max load carrying capacity of the truck. A LT285/55R20-E will hold 3305 a tire. Most tires are gonna hold a lot more than what is on the sidewall so don't worry about it too bad. I run a set of 305/50R20 TOYO ATs at the strip and they handle just fine. Let me know if ya got any more questions. Chris

Chris - thanks for the background on stock tires... I forgot about looking into them as a baseline. I appreciate your input. And it opens up some possibilities as far as tire manufacturers go. And I would love to try Toyos if I can find a good deal.

You bet, I deal with it everyday so it comes easy to me. Come on over to the Oregon Coast and I'll get ya good deal. Too bad Les Schwab isn't to Colorado yet. There are lots of tires out on the market that are great. An All Terrain is going to wear better for road use compared to a Mud tire but some people really like the like of the Mud tires cause of the tuff look. If you are hauling wight and are worried about wear just make sure the tire you do choose has a hard compound cause softer tires are going to wear quicker.
