2nd gen questions

I am sad to say that due to the economy, I am having to sell my 03 and am going to by a 2nd gen that I can pay cash for and be with out a truck payment. I found a 99 that has a bd super b turbo, air intake and stacks. The guy also says it has Industrial Injection laser cut 240hp injectors. He says it is a daily driver. Is is possible to run those size injectors daily? It also has a edge comp box and a fass 150. He said the truck was built before he bought it so he is not sure about the vp44. He said it also has a ats trans. Is there any way to check the vp44 just by looking to see if it is stock? Is there any way to tell anything about the trans by driving it? Also, do the 2nd gen have the same common problems with the front end u-joints. I have also noticed that most of the 2nd gens I have been looking at run the edge. Does it work better than a smarty on these models? I was pretty bummed about selling mine, but one like this will get rid of that feeling. Thanks for the help

I have a second gen, and the Edge boxes work well on them. Not sure about the Smarty. You are selling one of the best Pickups Dodge made. I would think long & hard about that. I have an 01', and my friend has an 03'.

Yea, I know. It sucks but with the pay cut my wife had to take we have to eliminate a bill. I just bout the truck in late 07 but put some money down so I don't owe that much on it. Thats the only reason I am selling, to get rid of a payment and pay cash for a older truck. Thanks for the info.

Anybody got any answers or comments about the 240hp sticks being used as a daily driver?

Does that truck have a Super B or a Super B Special? I'd think the Super B may be a bit small to run with the 240hp sticks.

I've got a KSB1 which is similarly sized to a Super B and I can daily drive the Mach 6s (220hp), but I keep the TST turned off and only run the Smarty. If I'm towing, I definitely have to watch the temps.

Depending on how the tranny is set up, those sticks may be really smoky with the automatic trans if you have to spend any time waiting for lock-up.

I would go for a test drive you seem to know somewhat on diesel's I know 3rd gens can get hot alot quicker egt's than my 2nd gen does. check out the truck. also the big difference pending what the guy has done is going to be your steering. 3rd gens and up you can drive with a finger. some 2nd gens you have to drive white knuckled and with a playful steering wheel. vp-44 you can get info data off of it. find out what it is i doubt it is a hotrod, monter vp etc. 240 sounds odd but I would think it would be smokey and hot with the edge turned up. and really bad stacked. the smarty is completely diff comparing 2nd gen and 3rd gen smarty software. due to the injection pump. etc. i have seen as much as 25 HP and somewhere out there 60ish hp gain on a 2nd gen pending other supporting mods on the vehicle but that is really hard to claim. call ATS and ask them if you can get any info from this truck on the vin for warranty or date etc. etc. sorry to hear about it. I did the same thing when I got a medical discharge from the Marine Corps I had a 04.5 and went back to my current 02. but I do get better MPG with this one and I dont owe that much on it now. but your taking care of the family so good on you. take care

I run 240HP injectors on my truck as a daily driver, but then again I have twins. I would think that would be way too much injector if you intend to tow heavy at all. Running empty it can be manageable I suppose. I wouldn't run anything over 150hp injectors without twins myself...
Good luck with your purchase!

Oh yeah, he speaks the truth. I haven't turned my TST (except for a couple of dyno runs) since I put in the 6s. I've towed heavy a couple of times, but it was also <50mph county roads where I had a full range of gears/engine speed to play with. Even then, it was one eye on the gauge at all times.
