2nd or 3rd Gen CTD Purchase

I currently have a 99 2nd gen running good w/ a few small things that need to be updated/repaired. I pretty much have this truck built the way I want. If you had the option of buying a stock 06 3rd gen megacab 4x4 for a reasonable price would you do it? I'd like the 4dr and megacab but not sure about going back into payments plus adding the aftermarket products.
1. Keep the 2nd Gen
2. Sell 2nd Gen and buy this 3rd Gen

Thoughts please?

I have new truckits too sometimes, but just have to fight the feeling. I almost sold my truck to buy a 07' a year ago. Glad now I don't have payments.

I guess I'm the only one so far who voted for the 3rd gen.

Depends on your needs, for example if need the bigger back seat (like I did) then move up to the 3rd gen.

if you have never experianced the conveniance of the four doors that open independantly (either quad or mega) you simply don't know what your missing. That was the last thing I was thinking about when I bought my third gen but is the one thing I appreciate the most about it now.

If you want the room inside, move up to the Mega, if you are happy with the claustrophobic feeling you have now, then stay happy with no payments

I voted keep the 2nd gen. I didnt not vote for the 2nd gen because its a nicer truck or the 3rd gens suck. I went from my 1997 to my 2005 but am looking ot go back to a 2nd gen. yes my 2005 is way cleaner, nicer, build with less creeks and sounds and a better interior and steering set up.....BUT!!!......Theres jsut something about a 2nd gen dodge cummins 12v or 24v that I need to have back! I loved that 97 and i just like my 2005.

I love my 06, will be buried in it, keep the 2nd gen and get the 3rd gen also if you can. best of both worlds.

That is what i did---too much $$$ into the 01 to sell so the 07 5.9 Mega DRW is my daily driver-nicer creature comforts/space.If you can swing both go for it.I love my 07 as a daily driver(auto)in the city and it 's better for the MRS to drive when she heads up on weekends to our lake property(dog/gear/girlfriends)instead of her car. But for the highway, alone,it is me and the 01,as i"m not getting any younger(really don't want to be rowing gears though the city rush hour anymore). I just spent 2 days detailing the 01 and just cannot even think about letting someone else have it with the time/effort---maybe they will bury me in it too.PS---11 years old and not even broke in yet with 39000 miles(63000KM)----DW

Just guesstimating but if your truck is worth 12 and an affordable 3rd gen mega 24, plus taxes and such. Then add 5 grand in aftermarket to get it to where your truck is now.

I'd just get a new base model with a better interest rate and leave it stock for awhile. You can put that full 12 grand down and possibly get closer to 0% interest for 60 months which you won't be able to do on a used one.

Hey I just did the payments for you since I am bored.

Used truck 48 months at 8% interest would be $488 a month if you borrowed $20,000. Assuming down payment and a few grand in mod money.

New truck if you borrowed $28,000 for 60 months at 0% your payments would be $466. So that is assuming you find a good deal like those ones on ebay selling for 37,000 plus like 3 grand in taxes (I'm guessing).

My math may be skewed a little and I'm putting 60 months on the new one since it will last longer and and I see those 0% deals occasionally. I've never heard of anyone doing more than 48 on a used one so I put 48 on the used one and interest is usually closer to 10% on used ones.

Just something to think about.

Thank you for all the comments...keepem' coming. I'm still negotiating w/the "new truckitis" in my head. The megacab is my uncles w/about 160k miles so I wouldn't buy it for more than $19k(per KBB).

oh, and the '06 Mega is bound to be a classic- highly sought after truck as there were relatively few 5.9 Mega-Cabs made.

Classics are cool, but I would avoid tieing myself up making payments on a truck with 160K miles on it.

It would take me less than 2 years and I'd have over 200K on it.

But I do see things a bit differently, I use mine for work so having a new truck that is reliable is nice.

Anyway, if I was like my dad was he'd put over 300K miles on a truck and it would still look new so different for different folks.

I appreciate all the comments and have decided to keep my 2nd gen...unless he changes his mind and lowers the price.
