285/75r17 -> 255/80r17?

Anyone tried a Mud-Terrain T/AŽ KM2 in a 255/80R17? these must be new as I could find any mention of them in our archives but there is a lot of posts wishing for tall and skinny (well I assumed they were talking tires but...)
These are 33.3" tall and look great in the pics. I spoke to a NTB tech and sales person the other day that claim they put a set of KM2's on a Tahoe recently and they were quiet and handled nicely. No idea what size but I doubt it was this tall drink of water but maybe her shorter fuller sister.
These are around $200 each and I've only found them online at discount-tires-2go.com and 4wheelparts.com.

I had a set of Toyo open country AT's in 285/75R17 and loved the way it looked and handled. It really filled out the tire well well.
BUT 14K and the Toyo's are down to 2,2,5, and 6/32nds? Nice and evenly worn with only the slightest sign of cupping. I rotated them every 5K (two whole times) Wow! That's Fantasic!

So here's my second question, What could have cause this short life span? Alignment? (with even wear?) shocks? Mine are probably original issue with 95K on them. Either tire I go with I really would like it to last longer than a year.

Hilarious!!!

I had Toyo 285/75s on my 04.5 before I sold it and I was not too impressed with the mileage I got from them. I rotated them and monitored air press. but they were half worn at 16K miles. I ran the fronts at 62 psi and the rears at 55. Seemed to ride well with very little cupping. So I feel your pain on that.

As for the BFGs, I would not expect a mud terrain to last much longer. BUT, I do like BFGs, especially the look of the KM2. The 255/80/17 sounds like a cool size, but might be a little too narrow on a 3rd gen IMO. Probably would look great on a 1st or 2nd gen truck...But you never know until they're mounted. Im looking to move up to a 17" wheel on the 98 and would love to see some pics of this tire, as I am going back and forth on tires...(why do I care so much about these tires that just wear out faster than I realize, makes me mad they cost so much!!!)
If I stick with the stock 16" wheel, I like the Toyo M55 in 255/85/16. But if I move up to the 17" wheel, that 255/80 sounds like a good fit.

Please post some pics of the new shoes!

Tires are such a pain for me. BFG doesn't have any 255/80's in stock and no scheduled date for the next run, call back in 4 weeks.

Scott, they do come in a LT255/85R16 here's a link to the BFG site: http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs...-km2/3930.html
Anyone that knows of any secret tire stashes, chime in!

That tire was the talk last fall for all us dually owners wanting taller but not wider. As far as I know its still just talk.I have kept an eye on the availlability of this size since and have not found any place that has it or ever had it.Same thing last fall, call back in 4 weeks. I held out till around May and finally went with 285/70/17's but had to add a spacer to the rear(dually).

I figured with my luck they would finally hit the market days after I purchased this other set but it still hasn't happened.

Wow, y'all are getting short lifespans out of the Toyos. I have 19k on the 285/70's and down to 12/32". Running 55 psi front and 40 psi rear.

Maybe we were running too much press. I thought a carcass with a ten ply wall capable of 80psi would be happy in the 50-60psi range. Oh well, that truck and those tires are gone now.

Bill, I saw those KM2s in that size!!! Awesome, but I cant convince myself to spend that much on a tire that may only get 20-30k miles from. Ya know? Plus w/ winter on its way, I want a AT with lots of siping.

I currently have the 285/70/17 Toyo AT's and recently learned of the 255/80/17 KM2's.. I will be going that route this winter when my AT's are shot.

bill,

Your Toyo mileage is extremely low. Do you slide around every corner or are your wheels way out of alignment, have you been practicing long smoky burnouts, or what?

I'm currently running a set of 285/75/17 on my rig and have 57,000 miles on them. Yes, thay are worn below the legal limit, but they are still going and I am not planning to replace them until this winter.

How do you have 57K?

I am at 26K and will be legally bald by 33K. My dad got 16K out of his first set and 25K out of his second... Thats towing and driving mild the rest of the time...

Im also curious how you got 57k out of the toyos! I drove very conservative on my toyos, rotated and balanced, and monitored press. I would have been lucky to get 35K out of them. Not one burnout, and no slides around corners.

My alignment is good and lots of highway miles. Nothing special.

I also drive in the mountains a lot, and sometimes with a load or towing, so they do get some extra stress from that.

And, as I said, they are now below the legal tread limit, but not smooth.

One thing about the 285/75 is how stiff and heavy they are. For a better ride I'm thinking of going to the 285/70 next time. A much more flexible sidewall.

Here's an update on my 14K. I don't slide around EVERY corner, long smoky burnouts don't wear out your tires, do they?

I'm thinking it was my alignment. I got a long straight board and adjusted my steering so that board when place against one front tire was straight along the side of my truck. Walked around to the other side and tried to place the board against both sides of that tire and no dice. I could touch the front of the tire and my truck but the read of the tire was tucked into the fender well too much. I took my wall-eyed truck to Firestone and got it aligned. I asked the counter guy if it was towed (toed?) out and he said a little but I kinda got the impression he was giving me an aswer to keep from walking out to the bays.
They also told me my tires are a little thinner on the center and I was probably running too much air. I tried to keep it around 78PSI all the way around but they pointed out the 60/80 recommendation Dodge conveniently stuck in my door jam. Hmm, has that always been there? I'm going to adjust my pressure and take it in for regular alignment checks (got the lifetime) and get a tire tread gauge this afternoon ($5 from Harbor Freight) and keep better track of my wear.

I also have a set of Toyo Open Country MT's on the way no one tell the wife I just dropped 12 bills on tires please...

I really like the cooper atr's. They have a 50k warranty and my last set lasted 13k. Got the new set for 46 a piece, and the warranty starts over. I wish I would of done this years ago. I have tried goodyears, michelin, generals, and recaps on the rear dually's and always get 10-15k. The coopers will be there from now on when I can get 4 for the price of 1 from initial cost. It is worth looking into if you have a heavy foot like me and tow often.
