285/70/17: Toyo AT or MT?

Alright, I'm sorry for starting yet another tire thread. Looking for some recent, real world input.

I'm looking at a new set of tires soon. I'm currently running Toyo AT 285/70/17's. They're at about 35k miles. They're wearing faster than I had hoped. But considering my truck weighs 7500lbs, and I haul a heavy slide-in truck camper, I can't really complain much I guess.

Was told by Les Schwab today that the same size of tire in MT is built "tougher". More plies in the tread and sidewall. Again, because of the heavy truck camper, I'm all about buying the toughest tire I can find. But...I don't want to replace a set of $1500 tires after 1 year if they wear fast. Les Schwab guy told me that the MT's actually wear very well. Maybe not equal to the AT's, but very near the AT so long as they're balanced and rotated OFTEN (which I do anyway), and the truck isn't driven HARD.

So...anyone here with experience with BOTH Toyo AT and MT tires that would be willing to throw out some feedback?

I find that it is hit or miss with Toyo tires in general. I have had 2 sets of A/T one that lasted 25,000 before I sold the truck (plenty of tread left) and one on a Suburban that were 50% worn after 10,000 miles. I have heard both on the M/T's as well. My friend has the M/T's in the 295/70R17 and he does like them, however, with that being said the 3 things he dislikes about them are that he lost about 2MPG, around town mostly, they are TERRIBLE on icy roads, and they are a little squirrely when towing his fifth wheel, but my Terragrapplers are as well so I wouldn't hold that against them. Other than that I hear they are a bulletproof tire as far as Mud terrains go. He is going back to an all terrain tire after his M/T's where out.

My friend's running 285-75-17 Toyo AT's on his 10,700# '07 CTD 4wd w/aluminum flatbed mounted Phoenix popup. He regularly travels to Baja and runs aired down to 30# for hundreds of miles. To date no flats nor structural problems on two sets.

I ran those same tires prior to my MT's(same size). You'll lose 1.5-2.0 mpg with the Toyo MT's,but they are super off highway and afford excellent street handling also. They do make noise and the mileage will decrease. I'll return to the AT's next time as 10" of annual rain here doesn't warrant a mud tread.

We average 36K out of these with cabovers on there 24/7 and fairly regular rotation and rebalance.

This is excellent feedback, thanks. I definitely don't want to give up ~2 mpg's with diesel at $4.10, and I drive on a lot of snowy and icy roads in the winter. I will bag the MT idea and just go with ATs. Unless I win the lottery and can buy new 18 inch wheels and put some M55's on there!
