2500 vs. 3500 curb weight?
My truck is an '06 3500 Quad Cab 4x4 SRW short bed and our local DMV says it weighs over 7000 lbs. I saw a 2500 the other day with non-commercial plates. Over here, anything over 6500 lbs. has to have commercial plates and very high registration fees. The 2500 I saw was a diesel 4x4 Big Horn Edition. It was late and I was tired so I'm not sure if it was a Quad/Mega or short/long bed. I am fairly certain it was a 3rd generation truck. I got a partial VIN from the DMV guy and it's: 1D7KS28C26J. He couldn't give me the last 7 digits.
My questions are:
Does my truck really weigh 7000+ lbs.?
Is there any way that guy's truck could be under 6500 lbs.?
Anyone have actual curb weights from your truck that matches either of the versions mentioned above?
Thanks in advance! It really pisses me off that I have to pay more than $500 to drive less than 10k/year and this other guy is paying a lot less.

First yes, its is over 7k in some state`s you can change the weight for registrations but then if you want to tow a heavier trailer or payload in the back you have to be careful, check your DMV

I took a load of scrap steel to the local salvage yard and their scale said my truck weighed 7,600 empty with me in the drivers seat ( I weigh 175). I don't know how accurate that is but I guess its close.
I run regular car plates on my truck but the DMV clerk said I was subject to an overload ticket if I was caught hauling or pulling anything. It's a chance I take.

I have several friends with simular trucks all 03' and above. We all work at a facility that has 4 state certified scales. I have not seen any of us less then 7000 lbs empty. My truck when it was new from the lot with out any of my personal items and a 1/2 tank of fuel weighed in at 7100 lbs. As of now with 35's and some personal effects it weighs 7600 lbs. I have gotten back down to 7100 lbs for running down the track, but I had to strip it including the spare tire...... Never seen a 3rd gen at less then 7k... But haven't weighed a standard cab 2x4, not even sure they made those with a diesel any how.

Mine is over 8,000 lbs. Stuff adds up! Air bags and brackets, fifth wheel brackets, tonneau cover, amps and subs, bigger tires and wheels, wheel liners, air tank, and train horn, before I had a lot of this stuff I remember weighing in at 7840 empty, half a tank of fuel.

The only thing a 3500 has on to weight more than 2500 is is over load springs. Maybe 50lbs extra in comparible configurations (ie quad cab, long box 4x4) My truck as it sits in my sig with in it full of fuel is about 7300

My bone stock 2WD SRW QC 5600 weighs -- with Leer topper, bedliner, full fuel & 195-lb driver -- right at 7,350-7,400-lbs from several CAT Scale tickets.
Without the topper, liner and the little bit of trunk junk carried, I might get near to 7k.

With 3/4 tank of fuel the last time it was on the county dump scale with me out of the truck it weight was 7278 and I don't have anything extra in the truck other then a spare fuel filter, a 11/8 wrench, a 12x16 tarp and about 20 feet of rope. Based on its weight I don't complain about it the reg listed weight of 6300 as I only have to pay license fees for 8K.
