241 DLD t/case chain slip
I would like to know if anyone has experienced what presents itself as a badly slipping (bang, bang, bang) transfer case chain only to find out that it was a $5 easily accessible snap ring that was causing the problem?
Transfer case in question is a 1998 New Process 241 DLD from a 1998 2500 CTD and NV4500

My 95 CTD had noisy tcase that was caused by a broken snapring. Local trans shop did the fix and used a Ford Snapring as a replacement claiming it is higher quality than oem.

The snap ring is not uncommon to break. It's in the rear output housing of the T case. There is a snap ring elimintor kit that you can buy, I don't remember how much it is I want to say around $50 or so. Don't worry, you're not the only one to have this happen!

I found a great group of guys at Transfer Case Express. They are located in Oakland, Ca. (near San Francisco) They were very helpful and did not want to sell me something I didn't need. They have a minimum of $20. A new snap ring and seal cost me $20.
Hopefully, since it has been snowing quite heavily at my home, I will complete my T/case project this weekend and return my truck to a 4x4.

Ya my snap ring just let go last week, took out everything
So now I have the up grade for the snap ring.
And all new gears, syncros, and blah blah blah.

The snap ring was in good shape but I replaced it anyway.
The problem ended up being the gasket between the t/case and tail housing. It is a fairly thick gasket that is impregnated with silicone.
When I swapped in the NV4500, I switched t/cases as well. I had to swap tail housings so I could hook up the speedo. My old transfer case 241 DHD had the nice thick gasket in it so I swapped it to the 241 DLD with the tail housing.
Don't do that! The thickness of this gasket was causing the problem.
