24 valve trouble

my 24 valve started actin funny today when i fired it up. it was idling at about 950 rpm and sounded like it had a big lopy cam in it. the check engine light is on. it runs fine if its movin down the road but if its idling it sounds like crap. gonna change the fuel filter tomorrow. could it be my xzilleraider actin up? or fuel pump? any ideas? thanks

Turn the ignition on/off three times, leaving it in the on position on the 3rd motion (do not start truck). Watching your odometer, it should switch from the mileage reading to trouble code read outs. Write those codes down and post them on here.

I've never encountered problems like that, but maybe some others have. Get the codes and we'll try to help out.

ok so i disconnected the chip and then disconnected the batteries and let it sit for 15 min. went back out hooked it back up. ran the same. like crap. i got the codes too. they were. P PCU, P ECU, P Done, P1688, P0237, P0380, P1693, P0230

found out that P0237 is turbocharger boost sensor A circuit low, P0230 is fuel pump primary circuit malfunction, P0380 is glowplug/heater circuit "A" malfunction, P1693 is DTC detected in ECM or PCM, and P1688 is internal fuel injection pump controller failure. I called rocky mountain truck service in great falls montana and they said sounded like the injection pump is bad. 1850 bucks for a bosch pump or 1760 for BD pump 300 install

so what's your fuel pressure?
That's why it is so important to have a FP gauge on our trucks.
You can get a new IP for $1050 and a new LP for a couple hundred more.

thats the thing. i was gonna order some gauges today. but looks like not so much now.im not sure what fuel pressure is. what IP would you recommend?

The 1688 is a very bad code for the IP. As Scott said you can do significantly better than 1850 for the injection pump.

Sounds like the injector pump is going out. Seeing your extra power mods in your sig but no low pressure fuel upgrade I'd guess the IP has dies of insufficient fuel supply. Or could be just the age. I'd upgrade the LP along with the VP. Especially now that an upgrade costs you about the same as the stock replacement.
As far as the source of IPs that has been discussed a lot. As long as you buy from a Bosch certified rebuilder, any will do, so save your money!

i was lookin on thoroughbred diesel and they have some combination deals on vp44's and FASS or AirDog systems. thinkin about a hot rod vp44 with a FASS system. are the hot rods any good?
should i get the whole system or just the FASS fuel pump?

I hated my hot rod pump. Wouldn't do it again. If you are looking for more than 500hp in the future, make sure to get an SO pump instead of an HO pump.

I would say pass on the Hot Rod pump and stick with a stock pump, JMO. Do get a FASS or an Airdog though, they beat the stock setup by a long shot.

is the hot rod a pile? so i wanna stick with the stock vp44 and get a complete FASS or Airdog system right. would the 95 gph be enough or do i need more?

quick question. why if i wanted to make more than 500 horse in the future would a stock pump be better than the HO pump? what is wrong with the hot rod anyways?
