24 valve fuel pressure

I need some help fast. I am going to be going on a trip to PA with my stock 2001 to pick up some heavy farm equipment on a trailer. I just installed a fuel pressure gauge and i am reading 8psi on idle and at WOT its around 1-2 but does not hit 0. My shop book says 10 at idle, and I have read its supposed to sit at 13 or so idle. So i am low on pressure and need to get it up within about a week and a half. I am goin to start easy and change the fuel filter, and then go from there. Looks like a may need a lift pump. if so where can i get a better than stock one? i really need the help and have to get it done before this trip. thanks!

You should not go below 5 psi.....unless the dealer has installed the new and not so improved in tank conversion(which sucks badly---thanks dodge). If its the intank I always see 4-5 psi, tech says it flows more and now below 5 psi is supposed to be ok, rrrrriiiiiiigggggggttttttt.

Anyhow, if you have the stock(engine block mounted) you are in dangerous territory with it at 1-2 psi. Change filter and check, if not do the lift pump and hope the vp is gonna make it.

As far as better than stock I've read some on here about getting one from Cummins dealers, don't know if they are "better" though. I've also read guys converting with the Holley blue and a host of others that are not original but have way better fuel pressure and such.

What I can't figure out is this. If from, what I've learned, flow of fuel is the critical issue, flow to lubricate and cool the vp. Why is it we don't see flow meters on our trucks? Small gauge you can put in a gauge pod that shows your flowing XX gallons per hour? I guess it would be alright if someone knew how many gpm was required for our vp's anyhow. I emailed Cummins and and they did'nt understand my question.....???? They gave a response but it was not what I was asking.

Probably more than you needed to know, good luck with it.

well i just looked i have the Intank pump so what your saying is my pressures for that are right? i dont like them that low. instead of dropping that tank and replacing it, can i add another pump on the frame in front of the tank? i can cut the lines and put it in, just how can i power it

Here is the TSB for the volume test.

I just replased my original 103,000 mile lift pump with another from cummins. I had it as an emergency spare for 3 years just in case. I am going to get another for a spare and this time I will buy an Airtex.

I have the intank pump, seen a steady 9PSI at idle but could pull it down to 0PSI with factory injectors and the edge being off... Pretty sad.... I was in a pinch and just had replaced the VP44, I didnt wanna burn the new pump out so I went to Oreilly and bought a Holley Blue for about 90.00USD mounted it on the frame and now I have about 20-21PSI at idle and cant pull it down below 13PSI even with the bosch 300's, quadzilla "chip" and smoke switch on...

I have been running this setup for over 40,000 miles with NO problems to report..

so you are running 2 pumps at once, one in the tank and the one on the frame correct? this is what I want to do.

So....how would I put on a Holley Blue with the block mounted lift pump (2000 model truck)? Do I need to bypass the lift pump altogether or will the Holley feed the lift pump? I am kinda new to this stuff and really want to understand before I throw parts at it.

Thanks.
