2007 Ram 2500 Auto Tranny Maintenance

I have some questions.
1) What transmission do I have and how can I tell?

2) What is the procedure for servicing the bands?

3) How do I get all the fluid out of the transmission?

I have a 2007 5.9L CTD Laramie Automatic Transmission

No bands
You can't, just do the best you can with the draining.

Welcome to DTR!

Don't worry about bands, unless they are slipping. Should be fine under 150,000 miles.

Difficult to get all fluid out. Drop pan, change filter and replace that fluid. If it's bad, do it again soon after (2-300 miles). Otherwise, be happy replacing the 50-60% you can get easily, and do it more frequently.

OPPS, MR Mosley beat me to it. No bands on 48RE?? Ah, your saying 68 RFE! On a 5.9L??

the trans is a 48re. there are two bands. front kickdown band and the reverse band. a 5.9l uses the 48re and the 6.7l uses the 68rfe in the 3/4ton and 1 ton and the aisen in the 6.7l cab and chassis. The front kickdown band should be adjusted evry time you service your trans every 35,000. There is only one way to get all of the fluid out that is to tear it down and drain the converter. Bone dry the 48re hold 12-14qts and just pulling the pan is anywhere from 6.5 to 8qts.

How do I tell the difference between the two transmissions?

Is there a part number on the transmission that will tell me with certainty which of the two transmissions I have?

yeah on the bell housing tag. Easy way look at the pan is it deep and short as in front of truck to rear its a 48re. or shallow and long it will be a 68rfe. If you trans lines go into the trans on the driver side its a 48re. if the go into trans on passenger side it 68rfe/

I should slow down and read, with the 5.9, it's probably the 48RE

Now were making progress

Cool!!! My fluid lines are on the drivers side. I will check for the bell housing tag in the morning when there is light. My tranny pan is pretty much square but I am not sure of your idea of deep is. My pan is approx 1.5 inches tall. Is that deep?

For 2007 the 5.9L CTD pickup models 2500 and 3500
used the 48RE automatic. RockinJohnny, your truck is equipped with a 48RE.

Only the mid-year (2007.5) models equipped with the 6.7 liter
engine, were fitted with a Chrysler-supplied 68RFE automatic.

[QUOTE=RockinJohnny;2700781]Hi Im Rockin Johnny and I have a 07 2500 CTD with a 48RE Auto Transmission NOW!!!
What is the procedure for adjusting the bands ont he 48RE?

From the service manual:

Adjustment-Bands

FRONT BAND

The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw (2) is located on the left side of the transmission case above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.

1. Raise vehicle.
2. Loosen band adjusting screw locknut. Then back locknut (1) off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw threads if necessary.
3. Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.) torque with an appropriate Torx™ socket.

CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 N·m (47-50 in. lbs.) torque.

4. Back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns, for diesel vehicles, or 1-1/2 turns, for V-10 vehicles.
5. Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten locknut to 34 bN·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
6. Lower vehicle.

REAR BAND

The transmission oil pan must be removed for access to the rear band adjusting screw (1).

1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
3. Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.
4. Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.) torque.
5. Back off adjusting screw 3 turns.
6. Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 41N·m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
7. Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft. lbs.) torque.
8. Lower vehicle and refill transmission with Mopar® ATF +4, Automatic Transmission fluid.

Unless its giving you problems like slipping or you have over 75K I would not even worry about adjusting them. I've never had to adjust the bands at every service on any Dodge trans I've owned in the last 35 years, I never adjust them until they started to slip. I know of a few rebuilders who say you adjust them one time and never again until the give you problems.

????The 68re has 6 speeds the 48re has 4 speeds. The easiest way to tell is to look on the gear selector guage. If you have more that 4 speeds then you have the 68re. Also the shifter on the 68re has a lever to upshift and downshift. Finally, if you have a 5.9, then you most certainly have the 48re guaranteed.
