Does anybody know the reliability of the 4 speed automatic transmissions in this truck? It seems that previous years had problems I was wondering if issues have been resolved

If you are doing only minor upgrades or running totally stock with the 48RE tranny 99% of the time it is an excellent tranny. Should it have another gear, probably, but it is quite good as is. Also to keep warranty issues covered and to keep the tranny working well you should follow the manufacturers sugestions for servicing it and all should be well. My 04.5 had no issues up even when I traded it in at 69000 miles and I had serviced it 2 times at 30K and 60K as sugested., I towed a heavy 5er with it and never had any issues. Guess I'm just getting to old for a hand shaker any more and as far as working a clutch even the thought makes me tired.

The trouble years, that have plauged Dodge's transmission reputation is going back to the early '90's. Since ~1994, their automatics have been pretty strong. I've heard the 47RH, 47RE, and 48RE (>04.5 I think) have no major reliability issues when running with a stock motor. MEaning they will run 100k-200k with routine maintenance.
