2006 overhead mileage computer

Does anyone know if the mileage computer has been modified to work differently from the 2003 models? I have a 2003 and my father has a 2006. When the mileage computer on the '06 is reset is does not reflect the true mileage at the time of reset and does not account for changes in driving habits. The mileage reading should be a cumulative average since the last reset. On the '03, once it is reset there is a big fluctuation in mileage depending on throttle position until there is a good number of miles recorded at which time large fluctuations are greatly reduced as they should be since the average is spread over many miles. On the '06, the computer can be reset and then the truck driven in a low gear at high RPM without bringing the mileage into the single digits. There is hardly any fluctuation in reading. The reading is also in the high 12 to low 13 range at 60 mph. This should be way off from my experience.

The dealer is saying that there is no problem as the computer tells them there is not one. I would expect to see fluctuations in the mileage reading after a reset until an average of many miles is established. Has anyone else seen this problem or can verify that the operation of the overhead computer is totally different from the 03 to 06?

Thanks,
Phil

Not sure if this is what you are seeing...

On my 99 when you reset one of the displays they all reset... On my 05 you can reset each display individually. so if you only reset the mileage it will not reset the avg MPG..

I do miss the instant MPG.. that was fun to watch and play with...

YEAH!! I've noticed it too!!

I stopped and filled, hit the reset multiple times, and it never went to zero

Everything else zeroed, but not the average

I dunno what the deal is

I also think it calculates the mileage more often...My '02 gasser seemed like I had to drive 40 or 50 miles to see a click or two (except after reset)

This new one seems like it updates every few minutes

Gerry,

I am resetting the average and odo. You can do them individually or hit the reset twice and it should reset them both.

Herrin,

On my 2003 when it is reset and you are not moving it reads zero mpg as I would expect. When moving and you reset it, the overhead reads what you would expect - low if you are on the throttle, very high if you are moving with no throttle, and in between while moving with throttle. The moment it is reset you basically have an instant MPG (how accurate no one knows). Over time I get an average of the average mpg over the miles driven. You can watch the overhead after a reset and see it moving constantly depending on the way you are driving until you have accumulated enough miles at an average MPG that it does not change often at all.

On the 2006, a reset at idle does not produce 0 mpg and a reset while moving with no throttle does not produce a high reading and flooring it does not produce a low reading. There is not constant moving of the MPG while driving varying the throttle.

In my opinion my 2003 is working as it should. I do not know on the 2006. The dealer that I took it to was ignorant on the subject as far as I could tell as they said it is working as it should (no computer codes). I asked them about other year models and they had no clue as to how they worked. The service manager said you need 300 miles after a reset to get a good average mileage. This seemed very inaccurate to me.

Hopefully an owner who is also a knowledgeable Cummins Tech will come in with some info on this and at least explain the changes made.

I've noticed the difference also. Mine was showing 16.5 L/100km, I was going down a hill with foot off the go pedal and hit the reset. It went blank for a couple of seconds and then 16.5 reappeared. It then started to rapidly decline (an increase in mpg) as it should when going downhill right after a reset. The '03 would have immediately gone down to 0.0 or close to it.

Your '03 is exactly like my '02...reset went to zero sitting still...But not the new 06

I thumbed thru the owners manual today

It seems that the computer resets, buts the display doesnt show zero...I dont remeber the exact quote, but it reads something like this: "Pressing the reset button will erase the memory and mileage will be calculated from the previous average"

Its in the manual..I'll post the exact quote later

Example:
If you were getting 15, and reset right before a 100 mile tow, it would only calculate mileage since the reset...But the display would drop down to say 10, rather than go up to 10 from zero.....Make sense? It only figures the 100 miles, it isnt counting the miles before reset...

I can drive from my house to my dads, a little over 4 miles, and see a .1 change.....I think it updates alot faster or more often than the older one....
