Guys I hate to bother you on a trivial issue, but here goes... First time changing my transmission fluid and I'm not exactly sure where to drain the fluid. There appears to be a drain at the very bottom of the transmission and I had seen on a previous thread that the drain was on the side. Which one do I need to use? Would it not be better to drain from the very bottom?

This is just an observation from someone that knows very little about the mechanics of our truck.. but is the transmission and transfer case separate? it looks like they are connected. being that close i wonder why they could not just join them and share the atf and leave us one place to empty and refill..

drain from the very bottom. fill with 7 quarts. that is one quart over full with synthetic atf4

What is the benefit of overfilling by 1 quart? Any chance of blowing a seal doing that?

because then when you broke them apart to remove one you would have to drain or have a big mess. while your there mite as well change the transfer also

planned on changing the transfer at the same time.. any tips or tricks would be appreciated. just picked up the 10mm allen wrench to take care of it... it appears that the 14mm is for the drain plug for the transmission

I don't think you need to, that was something they used to do to the NV tranny's, and the only way to do it is from the top at the shifter.

Tech Tip:

I: overfilling is beneficial, since ATF doesn't "climb" well - and the extra fluid helps to conduct heat to the aluminum case for dissipation (... not to mention all the early G56s that were delivered underfilled).

II: dumping ATF through the shifter hole is much easier - well worth the few minutes it takes to R&R the console, both boots and shifter.

The drain plug on the G56 is at the bottom of the transmission. If you are sitting under the truck facing forward (looking at the tail end of the trans) the drain is at 6 o'clock position, and the fill port is at the 3 o'clock position. A tip for the transfer case, if you have the factory skid plate, remove it. There are sharp edges on it that will cut you, and the drain hole in the skid plate doesn't line up with the drain in the transfer case. It will make a mess if you leave it on.

Yeah,, and when you do wear funky clothes,,, I use an outboard motor lower unit gear oil pump for the last QUART,,,,,,, I stick the tubing in through a wad of saran wrap (plastic film) when the pump is empty I slide the tubing out and keep a little pressure on the plastic,,,,, it drips a little bit,,,,,,

Then I take the plug and start sliding it up from the bottom and pulling the plastic wrap as I GO!!!!! always spill a little,,, but not much,,,

Im gonna install a valve some how,,,, maybe tap a 1/4" NPT in the trucks fill plug that I can remove and install until I need it,,,,,,,,,,,,,

how often should this be done? i have 65k on mine bought it with 40k...

I believe the manual says every 60k.

Yup, 60K intervals on trans and transfer case. I used Mopar ATF+4 per the manual. WalMart used to sell it for <$5 a quart.
