2006 fuel and the 12v CTD?
I have a question for the fuel injection gurus. How will the no-sulpher fuel, for 2006, interact with our antique injection pumps?

Wow, their going to "no sulphur" ? I didnt know that...your probably gonna have to add something to each tank of fuel I would imagine....Ive got an old 1970 'cuda and i have to add lead substitute to every tank because the engine has never been rebuilt..of course thats maybe twice or three times a year...where did you get this info? i would like to read that article...

Barracuda, you won't read it in an article...it's going to be law. The enviro-****'s have decided that they've had enough acid rain, and have been slowly changing the mandates on Sulphur content in diesel. I thought it was 2007, but maybe it's 2006...we go to no Sulphur. Personally, I think this is a big deal. We will be forced to add something at every fill-up. There is no telling whether that something will lubricate like Sulphur does. This is just another reason to look into biodiesel.

Sulfur is not a lubricant, so it shouldn't make any different if there is Sulfur in the fuel or not. The problem is in the process of removing the Sulfur; this process will remove lubricants. So as long as the refiners add a lube package back into the fuel, it should be any problem at all. Atleast that's my understanding.

I did some more reading, and Crabjoe is 100% right. The Sulphur removal process is where the problem is...not the actual lack of Sulphur. You're probably right...the refiners will figure something out. If they don't, there will be an awful lot of big rigs sitting on the side of the road in 2007.

Well over here we do already have ultra low sulphur diesel. As to what I read the US diesel will then be at the same amount of sulphur. In the norms as to what may be sold as diesel we do have specific minimum lubricity since a long time and this hasn't been changed with sulphur content. If the US norms for diesel don't call for lubricity it may lead to problems. Over here the refiners usually do add 2%-5% of RME (rapeseed oil methyl esther) and do exceed any required lubricity.
We do now have norms on heating oil too calling for low to none sulphur. You are only allowed to burn oil that contains sulphur in plants where the waste gas is cleaned and the sulphur oxide and all other chemicals that contain sulphur are removed before the waste gas is let out. I think that this is quite reasonable since more than 50% of the oil that is burned is used for heating and therefore it would not make sense to eliminate sulphur from diesel fuel only, if all the others would still be emitting it into the athmosphere.
