2006 Cummins 5.9 Motor

2006 Cummins 5.9 Motor

Heres the thing I found a 06 5.9 with an auto trans. the truck caught on fire from the the bed to the cab, the cab interior and cab is toasted but the engine and motor compartment are fine. The motor might have 5000 to 10000 on it and the drivetrane. My question is 1. would this motor be a good donor motor for my 2000 ford powerstroke? 2. would there be any good parts that I could sell to make some money from the cost of buying the truck? 3. what would my powerstroke motor be worth with 165,000 mile on it.
Any advise would be great!

aslong as the drive train is not toasted, you should be ok. i have a friend right now that is installing a 5.9 in a 01 F250. Looking good there. just has to install the motor soon. and as far as the powerstroke, id say atleast 3 grand or 4.

You will make money on the motor and drive train parts, but that depends on how much you pay for this truck. You may not want to say, but how much did you pay or how much do they want? That will help people on here determine if it is worth it.

This would be an extensive and costly conversion, because the 2006 3rd Gen 5.9 is fully electronic, i.e., fuel system, ignition, ect. You would have to replace the entire wiring harness in your current truck with the dodge wiring harness not to mention the engine computers, i.e., ECU, ect. Since this truck was toasted, good chance the engine computers are bad, not to mention the wiring harness. These are expensive items to replace. You would be better off finding a 2nd Gen 12v 5.9, which is fully mechanical. Simpler and cheaper conversion!

Read the 5.9 Excursion's post about the work he did for this swap. It was awesome, I think 11 pages of reading but well worth it. He details everything he ran into doing this swap. And yes, he did all the work himself and it was super expensive. As for the stroker motor, not alot of money for it. With the 165K on it, maybe $2000 or so. DI is selling refurb 7.3's for $3500. Now I would sell the HPOP, turbo, injectors, and transmission seperately. What do they want for the donor vehicle?

Thanks for all the input. I dont know how much I just saw it at a little shop that does towing where I live. I think that it would have to be an insurance bid thing. I thought about putting in a 12 valve, but I like the look of the newer motor in the newer trucks. Plus I'm going to school at wyotech so I hope to juice the crap out of it. I was also wanting to use the ford transmission and build it to handle the cummins. I'm not really to worried about doing the swap now since im in school but if I could get this motor and different things I need off of it to help with the swap in the future.

What transmission do you have in your Ford? If you have the E4OD, there are a couple of good companies out there making some bullet proof transmissions for it... You can save alot of money by building it up yourself, but do not go cheap on the Torque Convertor.

I have the 4R100. I heard that DTT makes some good parts for that transmission?

PI or Fabian for the torques convertor... And if you are going to do the swap for the 06 motor, I would check to see if you can use your Ford trans, or if it is better to use the Dodge trans. I know the guy that did the Excursion swap used the Dodge transmission...

Painless wiring make a wire harness for the CR dodge should take a lot of the mystery out of it. That way you will not have to change out the whole harness.

I heard that painless did make a harness but I was not sure how much it was or what it would control? Who would make a good converter for that ford trans? I heard that DESTROKED had some good products.

Get your 4R100 built by Brian's Truck Shop (BTS) in Lead Hill, Arkansas. He has set the standard for that tranny, and he uses PI converters. I had one in my Excursion and it was fabulous. I only sold it and bought the Allison so I'd have one extra gear. That was a waste of time and money.

The comments about having to replace the entire wiring harness is grossly inacurate. The 2006 ECM is a combination of ECM and PCM. Yes, you'd have to do some wiring, and the swap would be difficult and expensive, but it's been done and it is a viable option.

I'm installing a December 2005 Cummins and an Allison 1000 into my 2000 Excursion using an SAE#3 housing. If there was ever a difficult way of going about the swap, I'm doing it, but it will get done.
