2005 3500 slipping tranny on accelleration

When I take off the truck accellerates normally but when I step on the gas a bit the tranny revs up to 3000 to 3500 rpms and I can tell it is slipping, I let off and the tranny shifts up. Even under light accelleration i can feel the tranny slipping ( 2nd gear ) the rest of the transmission performance seems normal. The truck has 180 000 kms. I have had it for 3 months so I don t know the history and I am new to dodge and diesel trucks so any thoughts on what is wrong would be great.

I strongly suggest you stop doing that! Now go get a new filter, some fresh fluid and change it, and adjust the bands. You might not have to incur a bunch of expenses rebuilding that trans if you catch the issue quick enough. I fear it's probably too late though... and if the band adjustment doesnt fix the issue, then I suppose you roasted the forward clutches or the front clutches. You'll know when you do the service and adjustment.

cross your fingers.

I feel your pain canaminator. I have an 06 quadcab shortbed laramie that is doing the exact dame thing. I was also warned to not adjust the bands b/c if the forward drum wasn't fried, adjusting the bands would. I am not an expert, just another guy looking for an answer as well. I've been on several different forums looking for answers. I heard that it is a problem with the valve bodies and a lot of people have replaced a particular part in the valve body with allison components. Another problem I have is that I don't know of any diesel tranny men or women in my area. When I hear back, I'll reply to this message.

I talked to a mechanic that works with these trannys and he said I will probably need some work ( new band 30.00$ and drum $ 150.00 and some labour ) as he feels the damage may be done. I will have it in the shop tonite and know tomorrow. Prolly about 700.00$ on the upper end. I appreciate all your advice guys.

Stop wasteing your time and money and either have the whole thing rebuilt with upgraded parts or just have them drop in a rebuilt upgraded tranny. Performance Diesel, ATS and numerous others have good trannies with warrenties. Besides a billet torque convertor, flex plate and good strong new parts will make you happy and give you about 2mpg more anyway.
