2004 Cummins with catalyst/reactor?

It appears that the 2004 Cummins might not have the exhaust gas recycle (EGR). The following announcements indicate that DC and Cummins are going with a soot catcher catalyst reactor.

Interesting. Looks like something that will go inside the muffler. No more straight piping for '04 and up models??

But the million dollar question is.....How much power is this thing going to choke away from the engine. I'm betting the first thing these '04 owners will do is replace the muffler or just take it off.

Re:2004 Cummins with catalyst/reactor?

When is this going to happen? Will the HO be sold in all 50 states? ???

Hey Boldts
After looking at the sites I'm wondering how a maintenance free particulate filter works and what does "maintenance free" mean in this case. Hmmm. Where does the particulate go? Any thoughts? :

Re:2004 Cummins with catalyst/reactor?

When it heats up (I have seen other sites talking over 250) the catalyst causes the trapped carbon particles to burn to carbon dioxide gas.

Boldts,

Thanks. That just sounds like a catalytic converter. Maybe the filter part gets you through warm up by holding the particles until it can begin to work.

Looks like Cummins is following Caterpillar's lead and using exhaust treatment instead of EGR to meet emission requirements.

Re:2004 Cummins with catalyst/reactor?

I'm still waiting for my '04 Ram CTD to come in. It's a 49 state model and was ordered in September.
I stopped by a dealer last Sunday here in Northern Cal. and checked out the CTDs on the lot. Of course, they're only the standard output models here in California but here's the thing. They have what appears to be a catalytic converter in front of the muffler. It's not the same shape as the muffler and a bit smaller. Also it was discolored from heat. Hmmm. Looks like a converter to me and on a truck built before the '04 starting date. Has anyone else seen these?

Guys don't mean to add to the speculation... but I have repeativly heard 325hp and 600lbs several times frow a wide range of sources. It's getting closer and closer to January and the word is starting to get out.

Re:2004 Cummins with catalyst/reactor?

Hey Battering,

Is it worth hearing the speculation or should I just wait till they come out? What's up?
