2003 dodge diesel wont start unless either is used. Cranks over real strong and runs great even when pulling 12000# trailer. It will start again on its own unless I wait several hours (overnight) Also stalls sometimes when I put it in gear after idleing in park for a few minutes. High pres. pump replacement did nothing.

That is a sign of a leaky injector, using either to start. Stalling could be the low pressure (lift) pump. Is your lift pump on the fuel filter canister still? They have almost a 100% failure rate.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Rail pressure gauge?

I was going to replace lift pump next but diesel( specialist) here says there would be black smoke and power loss or even stall under load.He thinks injector but wants to do pressure test. problem is my job witch requires the use of the truck takes me to a new city each week. Four citys Four mechanics Four insufficiant time to diagnose answers.

try cleaning your cascade overflow valve. 03's have had issues with cov issues and not starting. (Been there) If that doesn't help it's probably your injectors. I have alot of posts about this sometime back. Should be able to search long crank and find hrs of reading. Most will be on 03s.

injectors are going bad letting the fuel flow back to the tank and not allowing rail pressure to build

cov was fine. Started showing a little black smoke when reved yesterday.i"ll see how it pulls trailer sun. night. 6 new injectors going in on the 30 of may. I"ll post results then.

Easy test three torx bolts a wire connector and shake it. If there is a slight rattle probably OK . No noise, no good. And do a search for chaffed wire near AC pump. Common on 03s with a ton of good posts her. Good luck!
