Hey Bigcumminz,
I am still new here myself and am on my second diesel. The only dumb question is one that is not asked. Lots of great people here to help.
The lift pump transfers fuel from the tank to the engine bay to the Injection pump. It seems the lift pumps were an issue with the 2gen trucks. I never had a problem with my 02 but I only had it a year until the power bug got the best of me and I traded for an 03 HO. I have not heard of any lift pump issues with the 3rd Gen trucks but time will tell.
