2003 Ford 6.0 questions

Hey guys, my stepdad went and bought a 2003 Ford F-350 with the 6.0(against my hounding on him for getting a ford). I guess the money was right, and he said he couldnt find any CTD's with a reasonable pricetag(and they are simply not many on the market in the area). He bought it with 99k miles on it, and the guy whom he bought it from changed the oil, air filter, tranny filter, fuel filter, and everything to it before he bought it-the guy is a good used car salesman, and has treated us right with everything we have bought.

Anyhow, he asked me a few questions a few minutes ago about it, and I have no clue, so I figured I would post up over here.

1. Is there a cabin air filter? If so, where? The previous owner smoked, and the smell is bad, so my stepdad says.

2. Is there a way to de-code the VIN?

3. What axle ratios were available with this truck?

4. Where would information be about what was equipped on this truck, such as our dodges always had a card somewhere on the truck(under hood, in glovebox, etc)?

If I was home, I would probably have already figured this out just by looking at it, but I cant, with it being 120 miles away, and me not going home anytime in the near future.

Thanks for the help folks, and dont make this into a brand bashing thread. And, please, if you dont mind, don't post something like "should have got a dodge" or anything of the sort, I am simply looking for information for my stepdad.

Looks like someone got rid of it at the right time , sorry couldn't help myself!

I think they were available in 3.73, 4.10 and 4.30.

As for the smoke smell can't help there much on the filter except say for the fabrics inside there is the stuff we used to use at my uncles commercial carpet company that had amonia in it and would kill any smell, even soaked in cat pee. Also spray stuff down into the cowl venting with the vent going... Do it on A/C, heat, and vent. I use Lysol as preventative maintenance periodically.

Well, word of advice and the reason why I posted. Had my truck in the shop all week and I've borrowed my mom's car this week to drive to work since she's on summer break.. Anyway, I feel well accomplished for the day since I got her car detailed. It was dirty, when people get older they forget about having nice stuff and focus on other people. She'll be happy when she gets it back .

Just a thought, isn't father's day around the corner?

My guess the smoke smell is coming from the fabric (seats, headliner, carpet, etc.). To my understanding the cabin filter only filters air coming in through the vents from the outside, not the air already inside. So I don't think changing it would do much regarding the smell.

1) Fabreeze
2) sure is
3) There are several. I believe 3.73 and 4.10 are the most common.
4) www.dieselstop.com has a wealth of info about all Powerstrokes.

No cabin air filter,

If it is a srw the only gear option is 3:73

If it is a dually then it could have 3:73, 4:10, or 4:30 if it has the tow boss package.

Either a drw or a srw, if the truck has a rear axle sway bar then the truck has the full tow/camper package.

FX4 on the rear fender means skid plates and Rancho shocks only.

For a fee a Ford dealer will run an Oasis report which will tell you any work performed on the truck under warranty.

As far as the Dieselstop goes, I am a member there also, yes they have some sensitive individuals over there, but regardless of that, they have some EXCELLENT Ford technicians and some EXCELLENT overall diesel techs that will be glad to give you or your father assisstance.

Thanks fellas.

Hvytrkmech, VERY useful information there, thank you, that made the everything a little easier to explain to him over the phone.

Joe_T, good advice on getting the truck detailed out, but since I wont be home till probably Thanksgiving, nor do I know of anyone around home I truck to detail out a truck, so that is kinda out of the question. Good thinking though.

Thanks again guys, hopefully he can get this straight.

OK... I have never actually done this or if it REALLY works... but a local used car salesman I know said that they actually quarter up apples and put them in the car. Then leave the windows up with the car sitting in the sun and it supposedly gets the cigarette smell out????... Don't claim it to be fact, just what I heard....
That being said, I DON'T let my wife smoke in my truck!!!

i have an ozone generator that works for removing odors .used car dealers use them all the time.... my wife was cleaning the trailer and accidently turned the stove on,it ran all the propane out of one tank ( 2 days) propane odor is pretty strong stuff, 36 hours of the ozone generator and the smell is gone,,, good thing i don't smoke or i wouldn't be here to tell about it

Like the apple trick, I read (never done it) but a cup or more of NEW coffee grounds sprinkled on the floor and seats, again left to sit in the sun for a few hours and then vacuumed up will remove the smell.

Good luck.

Cleaning the headliner really well will get rid of alot of the smell. You wouldn't believe how dirty they can get.
