2003 CA 235HP CTD vs. 250 HP CTD

I have been lurking for the past few weeks and have found this site full of respectful and knowlegeable people. The comments I have read about CTD have helped me to decide on a 2003 Dodge 2500 4x4 as my first Diesel.

Can anyone confirm if the CA version of the CTD 235 SO is the same base motor as the 47 state version 250 SO? The Dodge brochure talks about the re-engineered CTD being quieter, better cold starting etc. Does this include the CA version? Does the CA version already have EGR?

I am not gonna hold my breath for a HO version to arrive in CA. The rebates and purchase price of a 2003 are great incentive to buy now. I plan on towing a max of 8000lbs, and I am sure the 235HP will suffice, but I don"t want an outdated version of the CTD either.

Thanks in advance for any input...Mike

Mike,
The basic engine is the same. They both are HPCR (High Pressure Common Rail) designs and yes, they are much quieter than the older models.

The Boss Hog
(Smooooooth sailing at 20,000 ;D)

Since I have no easy access to a CA truck (I'm on the other side of the country) I can only assume that someone closer has tested this as possibly proven it.

As for EGR, I don't think that the CA version has EGR yet, but once again since I've never seen one personally, I can only speculate.

Like Boss Hog said, it is a high pressure common rail system and will have all the benefits of better cold starting, quieter, etc.

Re:2003 CA 235HP CTD vs. 250 HP CTD

Thank you for the replies. I have confirmed the above info with the fleet manager as well, new motor and no EGR. He is able to order 2004's and he has no info on a new motor, HO or otherwise. He has located a 2003 2500 4X4 SWB for me on a dealer trade. I hope to get it today or tomorrow. Price was just over invoice less rebates...a good deal.

Thanks again. Mike

Mike,
If you are happy with the deal that is all that matters. Myself I would not pay more than invoice especially on a 2003. When I got mine in January I payed invoice less $100, rebate and Farm Bureau member discount. I have seen where others have payed even less. Enjoy your new truck. I know you will.

Re:2003 CA 235HP CTD vs. 250 HP CTD

I have been trying to find out the difference between the CA SO and the non-CA SO, I am in MA and have the CA emmissions. If you look on the Cummins site they list the CA as having 235HP and 460ft/lbs, the non-CA has 250HP and 450ft/lbs. Another interesting thing is the oil change intervals are half for the engine with CA emmissions, 3750 and 7500 miles for schedule A and B versus the 7500 and 15000 for the non CA emmissions. I have called Cummins and e-mailed them as well with no answer as to why.

Re:2003 CA 235HP CTD vs. 250 HP CTD

Yes the data is correct on the CA SO diesels. I have the CA SO and yes the oil change is @ 3750. I of course don't live in CA but in Oregon and I don't worry about the oil change interval because I will never register it in CA, also there is a CAT (or noise suppressor) on it and the other CTD don't have them. According to Cummins the 04's will ALL come with this. There is also some programming differences between them according to Cummins.
I can say the CTD Ca(235) still pulls like a bat out of HELL and just cruises by all of those other diesels out there on the road. Oh yeah its quiet and doesn't leave that big cloud of black smoke you get from the PowerJokes when they try to pull a hill or pass someone.

[/quote]indeed it does.....I just pulled my first major load (9,000 lbs)back too SLC from Reno NV.......and out of the 5 passes Between here and their I only had too shift down on 2, one of them because I lost my momentum because of an impatient truck driver >

BTW I averaged about 14 MPG ;D and their is NO EGR on a CA SO

"Yes the only difference between the 235 CARB and 250 EPA is the ECM calibration, however DCX cannot recalibrate it due to emissions legalities as well as tool constraints. They can only recalibrate with the same part number calibration. Finally Cummins does not have the capability to program 2003 models because it was never developed. Insight and ESDN no longer work with the '03.
