2001 Steering play
My 2001 4x4 has 250,000 miles on it and has recently developed about 2 inches(or more) of free play in the wheel. All frt. end components have been checked and are tight. The play is definitely in the steering box.The shop manual says to make any adjustments you must remove the box.Is there any thing I can do without taking the steering box off????My p/u is totally stock with the exception of a K&N air filter, has a 6 speed with a 4.10 rear end. This is my third Cummins Dodge and they just keep getting better!

With that many miles on your steering box, time for a replacement. For a couple hundred bucks, it would be the best investment and avoid fighting a lost battle of adjusting the box and never be happy with the steering.

Don't forget the one thread that sugested to check the steering rod to the box connection. If that snug bolt loosened, the paly might be in the splines, otherewise you have to take the box out to correct the end play if that's the problem. If you don't have a DSS, then the bushing might have let go. If you can swing it, get a new box and the DSS. You will not have anymore problems.

Oh, guess I should say, I'm told AGR Steering Box is the way to go:

If you are shopping around you might check PSC too. Tom, the owner, is the former owner of AGR. Makes good stuff.

Take my advice on this one. I went through all the steering issues with my truck at around 70,000 miles. Buy a new steering box, and install a steering stabilizer (it's easy to do) from DSS after replacing the box. My opinion, as well as those of many on this board, the steering box/track bar setup on these trucks is a poor design. That block is around 1100 lbs, and the engineers at Dodge dropped the ball when they designed the truck. Keep an eye on your track bar too. If you see any movement in the ball end when someone is turning the wheel, it's shot. I made all these repairs to my truck in one weekend, and it drives like new now.
