The overhead trip computer takes a different wiring harness from the dash area to the overhead console. Not sure where it plugs into. From my manual: The compass mini-trip computer module contains a central processing unit and interfaces with other
electronic modules in the vehicle on the Chrysler Collision
Detection (CCD) data bus network. The CCD data bus network allows the sharing of sensor information. Not sure if you need the factory security system or not.
Hope this project works for your buddy. Keep us posted as I would like to do this in the future.

Different Harness!! I tried to add an earlier model compass/temp unit to mine. First the display module would not fit into my console. My existing harness did not have the right number of wires at the overhead console. The earlier model wiring harness has different connectors on it. This is when I looked at the Mopar parts site and found that there are different harnesses.
On my truck the under hood wiring harness has a connector for the temp sensor (located by the under hood light on the driver's side). You still need the wiring harness to go from this connector to the front of the hood where the sensor gets mounted. On earlier models it mounted by the bottom of the radiator and comes from a different harness.
I added an aftermarket remote entry system to mine and found that the door connectors and color codes were different on earlier models. It seems that Dodge did some major changes to the wiring and connectors in 2000/2001.

Go to WWW.trademotion.com or www.moparpartsamerica.com and check it out.
The different wiring harnesses that are listed for 2001 ram 2500 are:
W/o temp and compass, W/o temp module, W/temp and compass, W/temp module. It looks like they fit model years 99-02.
Module is listed as with security system or without.
No part numbers listed.

Low line trucks have only one CTM connector while highline trucks have two connectors. Before buying any electronics upgrades, you need to check the service manual to see which connector operates it.

A cheaper option....
Ok, so it doesn't have temp or compass, but I bet it would give you everything else thats available on an overhead trip computer....
HAS to be an ODBII compliant truck though.

Here is some info/schematics/location diagrams on the overhead console and connectors. If your handy with wiring you can probably do this without the wiring harness. Myself, I hate to see butchered wiring in any vehicle. Not sure of the consequences if the data link is wired wrong or grounded by accident. Keep us posted.

I did this mod a couple of years ago and you need a new harness from the overhead to 2 connectors under the dash, a temp sensor and a harness from the sensor to the connector next to the underhood light. The sensor harness is just 2 wires so it's easy to fabricate. The sensor and associated connector can be taken from any mopar product in the wrecking yard.
