2001 2500 Ram oil pressure

I have a 2001 2500 Ram with Cummins engine. Yesterday the oil pressure gauge dropped to "0". I installed a mechanical gauge. I ran the oil line from the top of the oil filter base to the gauge. I ran it until the temp gauge read 190-195 degrees. The mechanical gauge reads 25 to 30 at idle and between 55 to 65 going down the road at 60 miles an hour. Funny thing is the electical gauge read almost 70 at idle and 0 going down the road. This truck has 430,00 miles on it. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?? Is it safe to drive this way? I also changed the oil and filter while installing the gauge.

Dude, yer oil pressure sender is probably foobarred. They are known to quit and cause massive heart failure (at least that's how I felt when mine dropped to "0" while cruising at 70+MPH). Pick up a new sender at Cummins dealer or NAPA if they have one and replace the old one. You can access the sender from the front left wheel well if it's in the same location as my 1999.

Of course, it could be that you gauge just up and died too - I don't really know how to test it. Before you dash off to get a new sending unit let's see if anyone else chime in with some perhaps better qualified answers. Regardless, if your testing shows good pressure at the oil filter I should think that you are still good to drive the beast.

Cheers!

Mike

When Mine went it ws the sender.

Get the CPL number off your engine tag and go to a Cummins parts dealer for the correct sender and minimal hassle. The CPL is a four digit number in the "CPL" box of the tag. Its the Control Parts List number and will ensure you get the correct sender the first time
