2001 2500, no cruise

When I bought this truck the cruise was not working. It's a 2001 diesel 2500 6 speed manual which I find out is the only one that is all electronic(no vacuum) cruise control. It won't even light the cruise light and there are no blown fuses. I put the scanner to it and there are no codes reported. Anyone got any ideas?

Does the horn work? If is does not, that would be a sign that the electrical connection between the steering wheel and steering column is bad. I think it is called the "clock spring".

Horn works ok but the way it acts you would think there was a major disconnect like that. Thanks, R.T.

Does the speedo work? I'm assuming it does since you haven't specifically mentioned that it doesn't. If so, there's not much left on the system to check. According to the FSM, it might be worthwhile to check and see if the brake light switch is working correctly. Other than that, there's not much besides the cruise control switches themselves to look at.

I had the same problem and it ended up being a broken wire on the plug by the turn signal on the steering column. If your in a cold climate and the person used his tilt wheel all the time when he got in and out the insulation cracks at cold temps and eventually breaks the wires.

Good Luck

The speedometer is working but on the brake light switch I forgot to mention that the previous owner added a trailer brake module that has a connection to that switch. It looks like he knew he was doing when added it but I think I'll disconnect it from the system and see if that makes a difference. At the same time I can check for cracked wires near the steering column. This truck came from Texas and I think the owner was a BOB(big ole boy) so I think the tilt got a work out. I'm liking this forum. Thanks guys for the suggestions. Ray T.

Ok guys I waited til the weekend cause I thought this was going to be a major pain but to my amazement I pulled of the airbag and low and behold the cruise on-off switch connector was pulled back just enough so it wasn't making connection. You guys were right, I wasn't getting power to the system. Snapped it back together, took it out for a spin and the cruise works like a champ. Thanks for all the help!

Check the cruise control servo. That went bad on my truck recently.

Never mind. Maybe I should start reading the posts instead of skimming them.
