Gonna be making a quick road trip to Austin this 4th and I want to try out this 2-stroke oil recipe for a fuel additive.
Are there any 1st gen drivers who run it?
Pros?
Cons?
Any brand/type recommendations?
How much should I add per gallon/per tank?

Any help would be great.

I was reading in the general diesel discussion that you should keep in mind as a rule of thumb about 1 oz. per gallon of fuel. I filled up yesterday and I put 24 oz. in my 28 gallon tank. I haven't run it enough yet to see any effects. Maybe someone with more knowledge about it will chime in.

an older diesel mechanic who seems to have been around longer then diesels themselves says 4oz per tank and that should be fine.... no cons from what he told me

Cummins actually sold a system to pull oil out of the crankcase for burning and replentishing and recommended up to 10% (IIRC) as OK.

Not that I doubt either of your feedback but that is a very wide margin. Can anyone else fill in the blanks?

Not to belabor the math, but 5% of a 30 gallon tank equals exactly 76.8 oz.

I have a BMW 524TD and it has the same pump on it as the 1st gen engines. I have been adding half a quart to 16 gallons. No cons so far except that the bottle is the same color as the tranny fluid and I put tranny fluid in by mistake, so far it has been running good on it but I don't think I'll add tranny fluid intentionally. When I add 2 stroke oil along with Power Solutions I go from 33 MPG to 38 mpg. The engine sounds better too. I'm sticking with it in the BMW and I also add it to my 12V below. I don't quite get the same MPG increase, just 1 MPG more, but the engine sounds and runs much better. In the 12v I add 1 quart to the tank.

How about a bottle of Howes? Hmm injection pump price vs. straight #2 or a bottle of Howes... This topic can get as bad as a tranny or oil war. Use what you like. I prefer to stick to proven fuel additive.

The only real point here is "straight #2" ain't what it used to be. What you run through your engine is all up to you. YMMV. Evidently by as much as 5mpg! (at least in the case of angry tractor's bimmer)

1 oz. per gallon for the past year with no problems. It quieted my injection pump down significantly. No probs as of yet.

quart per tank, for about a year, also adding 1/3rd quart of ps white bottle. every few months I let it fill without, just to make sure that over time I am not raising the mix .

I have been using it for about 4 months now. I have used power service, MMO, Lucas in the past. So far, the 2-stroke bumped me from 18-19 mpg up to 21-22 mpg. Exact same road, exact same pumps, exact same driving style, so I think the noticed change is accurate. I have not noticed a seat of the pants difference in power or acceleration. In addition to the increase in mileage, the other things I have noticed are easier starting (could be the time of year though) and the engine itself seem much quieter. All told, I am pretty happy using 2 stroke. After reading up on it a little bit, I am using the walmart brand TCW-3 2 stroke oil at 1 oz/gallon.

I filled up yesterday and put in a pint of 2 stroke oil ($1.50, what do I have to lose?). I havent noticed any changes yet, but I am also still in the Yippee stages with my new turbo, so I may not notice any changes this tank ful.

Bgilbert- I agree with you to a point, esp concerning the MMO, ATF, etc. However, the 2 stroke oil is designed to burn, which seperates it from the rest of the pack of non-fuel specific additives.

I usually throw in a 500 ml bottle of 2 stroke per tank.
