2 quarts of oil in 2000 miles???

This is something new to me, a truck that uses oil. Changed my oil about a month ago and I was pulling out of the driveway yesterday and heard a faint ticking sound, checked the oil and it was 2 quarts low. I've got about 17,000 on this thing and cannot beleive I finally have a truck that burns oil, absolutely not a drop on the garage floor. Been waiting all these years, tried Chevy, Ford and finally got one with the Dodge.

Got the dealer on speed dial so I'll see what kind of run around they give me. Probably tell me I need to buy a new motor and come up with some lame excuse why warranty wont cover it.

Any one else burnin' oil????

it might not be what you think. Go out and check your oil after the truck has sat a hour or so and I bet the level is good. These trucks hold oil for a long time somewhere in the block. When I change my oil i let it drain for at least an hour and then set another hour after filling it to check the level.

Let it sit for about 30 minutes before making the judgement to add oil. 5 minutes after I shut if off it was 2 quarts low, as well as about 30 minutes later.

OK, sounds like you have covered your bases. I would for sure get the dealer involved now.

How was the oil level when you changed the oil? How many miles on it between changes? You let it sit long enough but was it level?

Now you heard a tick and checked the oil but even two quarts low you should not have had any strange noises. Do you have any other symptoms???

When I changed the oil it was fine and I went about 7500 miles, that's when the OHC told me to change it, I run Amsoil and am used to running 15k between changes so this not being able to run extended drains bothers me.

Yes, it was level.

No other symptoms, nothing under neath the truck to indicate leakage, no smoke at all from the exhaust through any of the many different scenerios.

Yes, there was a "tick", very faint and random, but it's a different sound and I pick up on sounds coming from my vehicles like a kid screaming, that's their way of telling us something is wrong.

Have you done any pulling or other heavy work to seat those rings?
Mine was pretty oil hungry after rebuild (cracked block) until I did a run up the mountains with the 5th wheel in tow.

next time the OHC says change the oil, do an UOA first. The OH bases the oil change on an algorithm on how the truck is used.... not on what the oil is actually like. In a week or less you will know if the overhead is lying or not.

Yeah, I pull with it frequently and don't exactly drive it like a pinto. The dealer told me 1 thing that made me smile and I use it as an excuse quite often, "drive it like you stole it". I've always broken in my vehicles the same way I intend to use them.

I'm going to start using the Oil analysis as a determining factor in changing the oil, my question would be if the dealer could use that as a determining factor in approving a warranty claim if it come down to it if I extended the drain interval based on the finding of the OA.

Edit: Dealer scolded me for switching to synthetic before 20k miles. I've been running it for 10k miles and up until a few days ago it hasn't used any oil and now all of a sudden it makes a difference????

It will be interesting what the oil analysis says. Good luck.
