1st gen 12v differences from 2nd gen 12v?

Aside from fuel delivery what are the differences between first gen's and second gen's. Reason for asking is I was given a 1st gen cummins and was thinking about rebuilding it instead of having my truck down while the motor is out of it for rebuilding. Thanks for all responses.

I would not use it since you have a buildable 1996. Several improvments were made through the years. Camshaft material, piston cooling nozzle size, injector location. I had a first gen engine for parts and the camshaft was broken in half. The link below covers 1991-up.
