1998/2001 rear end gears

Are the 1998 and 2001 2500 rear ends the same in that the gears are interchangeable?

It depends on the transmission that is in the truck. If the truck has a manual transmission then the rear end will be the Dana 80. If the tranny is an auto, then the rear end is a Dana 70. You can interchange the 80s with each other, and the 70s with each other, but you can not change use a Dana 80 carrier and gearset in a Dana 70 housing or vice versa.

Thanks. Both are/were auto tranny's. He swapped out 3:77's for 4:11's after about 40K miles. He has since sold the truck but has the gears and will give them to me for a case of beer. Then all I have is the labor to swap my 3:54's for the 3:77's.

Do the math, his are probley 3.54 also. Don't think there were 3.77's in 98. Save your beer.

Me neither. Not sure aftermarket even has for DANA 80. Were not all Diesels 80's during that time frame?

You can get Dana 3.73 gears, but just not in our application from OEM. Not sure switcing from a 3.73 to a 4.10 set would be worth it, or a 3.54 for a 3.73. Thats a 5% change in final drive ratio.
