Talking 1997 Sound System

Hello Everyone,

I just joined the forum this afternoon, and am hoping that someone can help me out with a stereo dilemma.

I purchased my truck from an auction (1997 extended/club cab), and everything seems pretty intact, excepting the interior. Someone removed several dash components, including the stereo. I bought a factory stereo on ebay, and was able to connect it with minimal restoration of the plug-in harness.

Unfortunately, the speakers were hijacked and replaced with some crap ones. My truck was originally equipped with the, "Infinity," system, but only the tweeters are left. I reconnected them on one side, as the wires were spliced just past the factory connector. The other connectors are still in place, and it looks like they were simply bypassed by some cheap wiring, run straight from an aftermarket head.

I would like to purchase the factory set-up, but the components are elusive and/or super expensive on eBay. I know that the stock Infinity speakers were constructed with an amp on each 6"x9," and it seems like the factory stereo reads the resistance of the system before any output is distributed.

I really don't want to hack into the Ram's harness to set up aftermarket speakers, but what is the general consensus?

I have the stock speakers from my 96 slt. Unsure of what brand they are or if its what your looking for. I know they all work and are in excelent condition. I put in an aftermarket radio and speakers and the truck never sounded better. Alpine head-unit 6x9 front and 6.25 rear with tweeters all for under $300

If you have the stock headunit, you'll need the stock speakers that come with with amps on them.

If you get an aftermarket radio (ex. Pioneer Premier DEH-590IB)
You could use a nice (non amp powered) 6x9 like pioneer, infinity, ect.

I would suggest the aftermarket stereo / speakers
The stock speakers will eventually blow anyways. (like mine were when I bought my truck)

From the research that I've done over the last couple of days, it seems that the standard sound system consists of 6"x9" speakers in the front, and 5 1/4" in the rear. The, "Infinity," system is pretty much the same, but the front 6"x9"s have an amplifier attached to each speaker.

I wouldn't mind substituting the speakers, but I will at least need the harness plugs that came fixed to the Infinity speakers, because I really don't want to hack off the wiring any further back.

I'm planning on keeping the stock head unit, because no one will break into a truck for the factory unit. I live in the city and usually park on the street, so this is important to me. With an aftermarket stereo, people do break in, looking for the detatchable face, whether hidden in there or not.

Well i really wish you would have came on here before you even purchased the stock in dash stereo.
You can just replace the speakers with aftermarket ones, cheaper and almost always better. If you have the factory amp then you just simply hook up the speakers no prob. If you dont then im sure the stock HU has an amp..if it doesnt then buy an aftermarket one and install the speakers.
I think you would have been better off just buyin an aftermarket HU. Usually the same story as the speakers, cheaper and better.

The factory amp is actually an individual amp attached to each speaker, as far as I can discern. If I had the amps, could I mount them to aftermarket speakers? My plan was to restore the truck to its original interior, and I figured that the speakers were stock (oops) until I popped the door panels off.

I'm planning to keep the factory radio that I just bought, but it seems like I might be screwed when it comes to the speakers. Has anyone just spliced into the harness inside the doors to swap speakers, or is that crazy talk?

I think my next step is probably to locate a set of factory Infinity speakers. Does anyone have a set for sale, or is there a good source other than eBay? My local Craigslist has not been much help with Ram parts.

I just upgraded my speakers and connected them to the wires in the door. I put in some pioneer 4 way 6x9 in front and 6.25 in rear. About $100 for all four and a big improvement over stock speakers. My FSM says that all of the factory HUs have a built in amp except for the Infinity HU. Which HU did you get? If you got the Infinity, you will probably need some sort of amp. If you got any of the others, you should be able to use the wires in the door and be alright.

I just bought the standard head unit. If I could buy the plug-ins for the harness, I would be much keener on splicing in different speakers. Does anyone sell those, or is it a junkyard only item?

The doors each have a black, ovaled, 4-pin receptacle, and I believe the back speakers have a rectangular 2 or 4-pin connection.

The tweeters are intact, and they have a square, black, 2-pin connection.

Superram, I went back and checked my FSM and it says that the infinity speakers in the front door have "intergral dual 30 watt amplifiers". One of the amps powers the front speaker and tweeter, the other powers the rear speaker for the respective side of truck. I can't confirm the location, but the term "intergral" tells me that they are with the front speaker.

Except for the tweeters, the factory connectors on the speaker side were discarded along with the speakers.

Does anyone have a set of speakers like this, or at least the connectors? Or is there a company that sells direct replacement speakers with factory connectors?

I really dont know why your trying to buy factory speakers. They suck ***. As for individual amps for each speaker, i HIGHLY doubt this. Wiring new speakers is as simple as connecting positive to positive and negative to negative idk what is hard about this...
