Thanks, you know it! and best of all I've got the full meal deal to drop the Vortec 454 into my '73 Z-28..........after a complete warmup that is.
Fuel injected big block is exactly what the '73 needs, and 12 valve is exactly what the crewcab needs

Ya turned out pretty good. But The International Dealer in Vernon BC has a rim refinishing machine. Sands and polishes automatically. $60 per rim. refinish to virtually new shine. takes about 45 minutes per rim.
Guess who's taking a trip out to Vernon soon.........

rides great. no balance done on the rim and tires. no vibrations. smooth ride, you can definately feel the unsprung weight difference though. seems to make the truck ride smoother so I can't complain.
Since I can't leave anything alone for 5 minutes....... Heres the Import shredders.

SAWEET! I tried to get my uncle to do this with his 6.5. But he didn't wanna do a body lift to make it fit. So now he complains about his $4,000 6.5 that is still s l o w ..
1-5-3-6-2-4
10-22-2008, 08:12 PM
you don't have to do a body lift on this generation with the right motor mounts......so I'm told from the fabricator of my motor mounts. will have to be seen though.

i didn't touch the pan rail. I trimmed the bottoms of the Gm isolators to fit the pan rail in between. and swapped some pan bolts around for correct length clearance.
cost.......not cheap. I'd have to run up the tab to know for sure but its up there. though I've been compiling parts for about a year prior. and I'm not just going to drop the engine in and call it good. it would be far cheaper to do that for sure.
its something like this that keep me from buying a "new" truck. so if I spend $5,000-$15,000 on a swap and truck interior overhaul and paint job. thats a far cry from 30-50K for a much newer rig.
I got the '95 donor dodge for $2000 whole truck. plus 22 hours round trip to get it. few hundred for conversion motor mounts. then its all the fitting cutting and time. that theres no price for. its only time. plus whatever you decide to do with the ret of the drivetrain matters too I guess. it would have been cheaper for me to keep the NV4500 that was already in the truck behind the bigblock. but I wanted an automatic this time for this truck. and my donor had an auto. so I went that way. that was a hard road fitting that all in with out a suspension lift or body lift, and working around the IFS crossmember.
Theres cheap ways to go about it, but depends on what you want in the end and what you have to start with. I for sure didn't go the easy way.
I used a '70s Ford divorced NP205 converted the 47RH from 4wd to 2wd [laugh] after we overhauled it.

Lookin great Luke.
Most of the motor mounts I have seen they are using the Dodge isolators from the First Gen Cummin's. With the ones you are using incorporate the GM mounts. I feel with this you can urethane after factory mounts. Care to indulge who you got them from?
Looking forward to see more information from you on this.
Oh, by the way, did you use the GM rad with the second gen intercooler or the rad and intercooler from the second gen?
Thanks,
Glenn

02-04-2009, 12:48 AM
hey glenn, I got the mounts from "crewcab59" scott @ Tennesse Diesel conversions. very bolt in. no body lift no frame notching.
I used the rad and intercooler out of the '95 the rad is so much bigger than the GM one I just had to use it. and fits around the intercooler perfectly obviously. it is a tight fit with the CAC between the headlights. had to cut alot of the rad support out to fit. and have to reinforce whats left.
there is some lean to the rad and CAC but the stock GM rad clamps still work. the rad will not come out the front without removing the headlights. or pull the rad and CAC as a pair out the back.

Hey Luke,
I just stumbled across this thread and had to read the whole thing. Quite the ambitious project, and it looks like you did great. It didn't sound like you had any huge problems that took forever to get around. Anyway, congrats. You are probably almost ready to start driving it soon and I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of it all together. Are you planning to do the paint right away, or wait a while?

Paint, not right away. going to wait until at least winter is well over.
Cross member? my truck is a 4wd. theres a diff under there thats bolted to the framerails. the sump will always be a rear sump though. and it is behind and below the diff area. but not lower than the lowest point if that what you're after.

WOW, that is a real bad case of OCD. [laugh] You are going to confuse a lot of people when that truck is finished. Ford chassis with a Chevy cab and a Dodge engine/tranny. [laugh]
Nice job!

got my new motor mounts. quad high density poly isolators. quality is there. fit and finish looks good. I like them. even took the time to mill the back of the block mount. pics don't really show it but it 1/2" plate for the block mounts and the subplates are 1/4" good beef.

I have not seen these motor mounts. Who makes them and where do you get them?

I got them from Auto World in Montana. but I believe they are "Destroked" mounts.

Thanks. I wonder where you can find just the isolators for a stock replacement. They look better than the rubber mounts.

Thanks

its coming along. I've just got to setup the stands to hold the body up now. so I can center it and make body mounts. the cab will come down about a foot and a half from where it sits right now.

Luke I have a few questions about your wheels but I don't want to hi-jack this thread. Can you PM me or I PM my questions to you?

put them up here..........don't even worry about it. maybe someone else has the same Q's. I might not even know the answers

Your wheels are 22". So are they original 22.5's that are cut down to 22? What size tires did you run?
1-5-3-6-2-4
12-06-2009, 07:57 PM
yup they were 22.5" alcoas off a freightliner. the rubber I ran was 305/45r22 Nitto 420S. stock suspension no lift. no cranking the torsion bars either.

So where did you have them machined down to 22" and at what cost if you don't mind?

there is a machine shop here in Calgary, that has a big lathe. they did it for me/ was $100 a rim.

i wish destroked made mounts to work in my 87 chevy cummins swap, i wonder how those mounts are going to work with the ford chassis? is any extra fab. going to be required?
1-5-3-6-2-4
12-07-2009, 11:53 PM
nope they are pretty bolt in. i line it up forward/backward exactly where I want it and I sink the bolts through. done deal.
well the new of the company is deSTROKED so i can see them not making chevy mounts. I put a cummins on a ford frame where there used to be a powerstroke engine. the Destroked mounts were designed for exactly this. I'm just putting a chevy body on a destroked Ford F450. sort of. [laugh]
but theres 2 outfits that DO make cummins chevy conversion mounts and cross member for the older chevy trucks.
Scott at Tennessee Diesel Conversions makes kit. and Avalanche engineering makes a bolt in crossmember/mount kit.
So basically, you are defording a destroked conversion by dressing it up with a bow-tie.
Good job overall, I like what you're doing. Pretty much building everything that a ford isn't. Good engine, comfortable body, and still the backbone of a real work truck.
If I had the time, it would be great to do the same things, although I am too busy keeping everyone else' world working properly. That said, I have a short term plan for a turbo on my 1990 toyota pickup with a stock 22r. And I also have a 93 GM ex-cab dually, with a 6.5 that is getting a new tranny, and a 8x9' dump deck, and probably a straight axle, for use as a wood truck.
Keep up the good work, and the updates.

yes that about sums it up.
I've gutted the interior too of all the blue. I have a full black leather interior waiting to go in.

yeah, that kinda slipped my mind that the chassis you are using was originally i powerstroke!......but destroked does make motor mounts for a 88-00 chevy i believe.....awesome build man!
Any updates? I have a 94 chev extended crew cab that's getting a 12v BT6 in the next couple weeks. Mine is also getting a 6" suspension lift so I'll probably be able to drop my motor pretty deep to get the weight lower.

are you solid axle swapping the '94? or IFS lift?
either way it is restricted to your engine crossmember. doesnt make any difference to lower your engine really, you're putting a 1200lb engine into a 7000lb truck. whats a couple inches really getting you.
theres a couple places that make mounts and crossmember for GMs. Tennesse diesel conversions is where I got my original mounts for the '97 Gm 3500 chassis. Scott is a goodfella there.
I'm keeping the ifs. I haven't had any problems with it so far and I'm getting old. I like the cumfee ride. I want to drop the engine as far as I can just for the lower C of G. I know it'll not be much, but I'm not putting on huge tires or anything crazzy. I'm just building a nice simple reliable tow rig.
I'm a steel fabricator so fabbing the mounts won't be a problem. And mine won't be 7000lbs. I'm hoping to keep it under 8,000 but will probably be in the 9,000 range by the time all is done.

your ifs brackets will be in the way. and the brackets are integral with the engine crossmember. as will the torsion bar crossmember be in the way of the Tcase. but its your build. if you want to deal with the headaches of lowering it. giver. what s the point of a lower COG by a few inches if your not wheeling it or racing it?
what kind of truck do you have that'll weight 8 or 9k? my dually on the F450 chassis with the cummins probably won't be over 8500lb.
It's an extended cab duellie with a full width box with stepside boxsides in place of duellie flairs, with the bt6, 5 spd, 205 tcase with full p.t.o. hyd setup to power a under chassis wheelift. Should be pretty stealth, unfortunarly, she'll be pretty heavy as well.
As far as the bracketry problems go, that's one reason I'm putting in the 6" lift. Redesign what I have to and keep the cog low. This is going to be a tow rig. the lower the cog is the more stable it's gonna be. Between the lift and the dropped drivetrain, I should be close to stock while running 36" rubber.

Do you see what I've been trying to say. the truck is 25' long dual rear wheel. there is nothing more stable than that on the road. even with a 6" lift you won't be losing anything in the stability of the platform. theres a ton of work you could avoid for very very little gain if anything at all with stability.
let me know how it works out for you though.
I do see what your trying to say. Messing with the torsion bar mount won't be a problem due to the lift. Oil pan to diff contact, not a problem either, again, due to the lift. I was originally planning on putting in a body lift to clear the tires, but wouldn't have enough room for the wheellift to function how I wanted it to. The airbag setup was going to cause me some problems, which again were solved with the lift. Putting in the lift will raise the cog. This in itself is not a real problem, but if I can drop the motor when I buld the mounts, why not? I don't shy away from something because it might be a little more difficult. I actually enjoy the build, sometimes more than the result.

I'm just having a hard time visualizing I guess. thats why I said let me know how it goes.
