1995 Where should I start??

I have a 1995 Club Cab 4x4. It has around 275000km (170000miles) I've owned it since almost new, I have never done anything to the truck besides maintenence. My question is...should I put 50hp injectors in? Or go with a fuel plate? The diesel shops are suggesting I do the injectors becuase of the milage. I am really tired of the 160hp, it feels like I'm driving a K-car.
I have never changed the lift pump, is that something I should test first...or with that mileage should I just go ahead and change it?
Thanks

Re:1995 Where should I start??

Welcome farmer,my two bits of advice is to search and read on this site as well as www.dieselram.com www.turbodieselregister.com , I read for more than a month and found it to be very helpful and faster to come to a conclusion as to what I wanted to do to my truck, I had some advice from a guy that I think is the best advice to give to someone new, first figure out what you are going to do with your truck most of the time, next search as I stated above and read and absorb, get you some ideas then get after it using the advice you get from these web sites. There are alot of great guys and the most excellent advice to be had here to save a guy some hard earned money on repairs and bombing his truck,Goodluck Rick

Re:1995 Where should I start??

That is good advice, but I have looked and can't find a question specifically like mine. I wonder if the injectors should be changed as maintenence, because if I order a #6 TST plate that should give me 230hp. But at a later date say I put in 215hp injectors a #6 plate would be too much I'd be better off with a #11 or #12 plate. Am I right in how that works?

I think the 11 & 12 plates are more for standard trans trucks and I'm guessing you have an automatic. You're on the right track asking if what you have in mind might be too much. It's pretty easy to reach the limits of your auto transmission.

I phoned Piers at Piers Diesel Research in Vancouver before I started bombing my truck. He's a wizard with these trucks and will give you straight-up advice. He'll always make time to talk to you. His website is listed in the Links section along with the phone #.

You can edit your profile and add what options you have so people can help you better. Good Luck. Happy BOMBing! It's addictive!

Re:1995 Where should I start??

The FIRST thing to do is get gauges. You need a pyrometer at a minimum. You won't know what you are doing without one. The second thing that I would suggest is to check the timing. The 12v is known for the pump gear slipping over time. It would be so gradual that you wouldn't even notice it. The next thing would be either a fuel plate or injectors or both. If you have an auto tranny you need to be careful or you will tear up your tranny. At that point you are looking at about $3000 to $4000 to repair. BOMBS AWAY!!

You say you've done nothing to the truck except for regular maintanence...
have you ever had your valve lash adjustments? That'll make a big difference getting your motor back up to specs.

Re:1995 Where should I start??

I guess I would count a valve set as regular maintenence....I've done it every 100000kms none of them have ever been out enough to have even bothered. But still feels good when it has been done.

I have a '95, too

Farmer, there's been some good advice given so far. I've been working on these things since they first came out, and I love 'em.
I got this '95 recently. I just put a pyro and boost gauge on so I could see the change made by other mods. The truck has a 4" cat back exhaust on it already.
My order of attack will be:
Cat gutted or gone
Timing to 15 or 15.5
Air Filter- I'm not picky, just want breathing
Cap the wastegate line, or adjust to 22 lbs boost
Push fuel plate forward all the way, if I'm still not happy, I may try to grind it to a #6
Then next would be injectors, but I doubt I'll want to go that far.
I will be content with 250 HP or thereabouts. I stuck to the Mother Cummins company line of "stock is best" for a lot of years, but the leash is off now.
I don't tow big loads, so I really don't need a big horse. I'd just like it to run well.
There's plenty of info on the site, just remember, some are trying to win 12 second drag races, while others are just looking for a strong, reliable tow truck. You need to know your needs/wants, and decide what's best for you.
Good Luck!

Re:1995 Where should I start??

Farmer,
I'm with you. I couldn't live with the 160 horse, especially after buying the Kountry Star.
My first purchase was guages, boost and pyro, then the NAPA air filter. Followed that with a 5 plate but had too much heat pulling so dropped back to an 8 plate slid 60 thou forward. Just added total 4 inch system which dropped my towing temps allmost 100 degrees. Don't really know where I'm at with the horsepower but the setup pulls my fifth like I want it to so I'm happy.

Re:1995 Where should I start??

Just an update....I thought just for the heck of it I'd slide my stock plate ahead...so I did, back 1/16" from all the way ahead. Moved the AFC housing all the way ahead. The smoke is just right, a nice little cloud just before the turbo catches up. I couldn't believe the difference! Not a Hotrod yet but what an improvement! Should have done that 8 years ago! Now at 60mph I can step on the pedal and I can feel it pull me back in the seat. Used to be that I needed about a mile of clear road to pass someone on the highway.
Guages are on my list then a REAL plate.

Re:1995 Where should I start??

Look at my sig, the power enhancing part that I have will really wake that thing up but the auto tranny will not like it, not even a little bit, unless it has been modfied. Get some gauges as things get really hot in short order.
